Tips or advice for flying with a new puppy? - Page 1

For those who have flown with a new puppy, any tips? Do they have similar issues as humans with ears ( so I need to make sure puppy swallows during ascent and descent)?

Flight is about 3 hours. Puppy is 9 weeks old.

Nothing? Oh well, we'll get it figured out.

Just saw this I am not sure that they do have same ear problems as us but I go with the assumption that they might so I bring a chew with me for the pup in his sherpa. I also put a wee wee pad in the sherpa in case of accident and bring another one along in my bag and try and potty the dog in one of the "family" rest rooms prior to boarding on the wee wee pad . I do pack a small amount of kibble in my bag as well in case I get hung up at airport flight delay/canceled etc... so I can feed the pup if necessary. I will also carry a collapsable water bowl and purchase a bottle of water after I go through security so I can offer the pup water during the flight if I feel he needs it. I also have a collar and leash that will fit as well as some sort of stuffed toy that he can snuggle with in the sherpa bag for comfort as he/she is leaving siblings for the first time. That is about it I think.. Good luck!!

Thanks Lyn. I was trying to figure out the potty thing after we got through security. Using a puppy pad in the bathroom is a great idea. Thanks.

I also was thinking to have an energetic play time before we board so hopefully the puppy will sleep most of the flight.

I had someone suggest giving a small dose of Benadryl . I am not sure I like the idea. Any thoughts?

Some old newspapers in the crate, one or two towels for afterwards, some water, try to go potty before the flight starts - no food at this day until after the flight. Most puppies don´t mind.
I don´t believe in Benadryl in this case, but on the other hand I guess it won´t harm.

My thought too Susie. I am not a fan of giving out drugs " just to make my life easy".

I didn't do benadryl for either of the baby pups I flew and they flew without incident. On the other hand I flew over to Finland with my 5 mos old pup and she needed a dose of benadryl during that flight as it was 8 hours and she wouldn't settle but that was a different scenario. Babies are usually fine:))

Both times I picked up my pups. I brought potty pads, kibble, leash, harness, collapsible water bowl, a small furry/fabric toy and blanket that I rubbed all over mom and any siblings before I left the breeder. During the flight I would bring the Sherpa bag up to my lap or empty seat and open the top enough for them to poke their heads out. The flight attendants loved it and so did the babies :) My pups were happy the entire flight and I never had any problems.
