Due to the threads being discussed about dogs being shot in certain situations, I thought I would share something with you all. It's not anything super brainy and many of you might already do this but ,,,

I always have a extra muzzle in my vehicle just in case I need to slap it on. Most here know the issues I have with my male Prince and it makes it all the more important for me to secure him in certain situations for his own safety as well as for others. You never know what type of situations could arise that would warrant muzzling and having one handy could  just possibly save his life~ for whatever it's worth I just felt I should share. :)

Good idea Ruger.  I've already started to keep Taz's muzzle in

my car - the only time he needs it is on visits to the Vet - fortunately,

UK Police are less likely to start taking shots at any dog.

Whether it would have made a difference in the case of the

Rottie, if he'd jumped back out of the car but wearing a

muzzle, I guess we'll never know...

What type muzzle do you keep in your cars? I need to buy one I guess.

This muzzle was referred to me by Kelly when I sent Prince to IL ~ I love it because it's easy to apply and its breathable. The clear plastic is softer than the others and that's a bonus too~

Hund~ not sure if a muzzle would have made a difference for the Rott~ poor dog and I honestly couldn't watch the video :,(  I can't see that kind of stuff it does something terrible to my insides.

My idea is in the event that my car would breakdown or even if I was pulled over for a ticket the muzzle gets applied. I am trying to avoid an issue~

I have a basket-style muzzle, the 'cage' part is made of metal.

Not very soft if it pushes into your leg or something,  but it

cannot for sure be chewed through !   Have had a variety of

muzzles over the years, inc. leather 'baskervilles' (basket) both

hard & soft;  Mikki-style cloth muzzle-sheaths.  I bought this

metal one for Vee years ago (because she really did like to

bite people) and it still looks like new.  Straps are black webbing.

No idea at this distance what make it is, and no label left on it,

the only sign of wear & tear.  Bought in some long defunct Pet

Shop.  You can feed treats through it, but they can't eat or drink

properly with it on.  For purposes of Rugers suggestion, I think would

be good as it is very visible !

If the dog is kept muzzled all the time in your car then you maybe have a chance.  If the police are a bunch of dicks then they won't let you have the time to muzzle your dog.  Did you see the video of the man shot for going back into his truck when asked for his Driver's license .. doubt the cops will let you search around for a muzzle and put it on the dog .. those with itchy trigger fingers who have watched too much "Deadwood" will be sure you are going for a gun and shoot you in the back.  Don't get out of your car until ordered to and ask the officer to let you secure your dog first.   Plenty of instances where the dog owners have begged to let them have a chance to chain or put their dog away from danger and the cops killed the dog anyway .. easier and quicker for them.  The laws need to be changed and probably that will only happen when the costs for damages skyrocket for the police.  Dogs are cheap so they know if they kill your dog their damages are cheap compared to the millions they have paid for illegal and criminal shootings involving human citizens.  A dog off your property should have a secure collar, rabies tag, microchip and whatever else the dog needs to be legal.  In that way if you get lucky and get a good cop they can handle your dog and find you with the microchip or licenses.  If a police dog comes in my fenced and private back yard and I shoot him ( almost all police dogs are male .. the cops need balls on their dogs) I will be hauled in and likely charged but if a cop comes into my yard and kills my dog it is perfectly OK.  Seems that the police have too much power and discretion to use their weapons without controls by the citizens.  I believe many many dogs are shot in their own house or on their owners property.  Don't let cops on your property without a warrant .. warrantless dog shootings account for a lot of pet deaths as the police will enter before you can put your dogs away .. if you let them search or enter tell them you will put your dogs away first or they will need a warrant .. the same with car searches.  If there is a group of cops you can bet one of them is a dick and he is the one who will shoot your dog .. the rest will then back him up even though they know he was being a dick.

Reaching for a muzzle on the floorboard will get you shot. It is unrealistic to believe you have time to put a muzzle on your dog. Not to mention, everyone jumping on the bandwagon and voluntarily keeping your dog muzzled while in your own vehicle is opening the door for it to becoming a law.

Best if the dog is in a crate if riding .. protectsthe dog in an accident and from police action if you are injured or arrested.
