Have a breeding in the works, doing a surgical insemination using frozen semen.  Just curious as to what those of you who have done such before have paid for the procedure.

I have a friend that  has done several and I believe it was about $1200.00 each time, but with a Samoyed female which was about 55-60 lbs.  So some difference will be with a GSD as they are bigger and the anastectic will be more.  Good luck and be ware they whelp earlier than the usual 63 days, usually 59/60 days as the semen does not have the travel time.  Nan

From what I have learned they do not whelp any earlier.  It's because the optimum time for surgical is 3 days after ovulation.  Most people incorrectly count days from breeding.  It's days from ovulation.

Good luck with your breeding!

Xeph, IMO you should expect to pay anywhere from $1500 to $2000 for a surgical implant depending on the number of progesterone tests that need to be done and evaluated. If you want an ultrasound, that will probably cost another 100 or more. Use the best repro vet you can find. Good luck........

Those estimates are all incredibly high.  Wonder where people are going for their surgicals.  The place I'm going is considerably less than that (about 1/3rd of the price) with high praise for the results.  Interesting to read, though :)

The actual AI surgery was about $750 or so when I did frozen last fall (including the semen analysis). There were a lot of other expenses related to the breeding, however -- from transport of the frozen semen (cost me about $250 even though I was the one to drive it from storage to the vet doing the surgery). Then there were about 5 progesterone tests, then ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy and xray for a count (there turned out to be 4 pups). There may also be some extra expense related to AKC registration, but those are not extreme.

Not incredibly high in Florida for a repro vet to surgically implant a bitch including a minimum of 4 progesterone tests. I guess it depends on where  you live?

The price seems to vary quite a bit. We did three and with an average of 4 progesterone tests the cost was about $400 each. The last produced seven pups. I would look for a vet that raised Bulldogs, they have a lot of experience all the equipment and offer economical prices.

Ultrasound, semen shiping, or transportation are extra.

Good Luck
