Anyone have a MalinGer Malinois? Any health issues? Allergies?

I adopted a MalinGer Mal and she have severe allergies. She will have to be heaviliy medicated just be comfortable as it appears her allergy is more than food, and is grass and dust. Great working dog.....has to be bathed everytime she goes outside!

I would like to know if anyone has one of their dogs with allergies and who the sire/dam are. According to their website they have produced over 600 dogs and 7 of them have had allergies.

Feel free to private message me if you like :)

WorkingGirl,

Have you contacted the breeder? If I were the breeder, I would want to know, maybe it was genetic, maybe not.

You adopted the dog, or bought the dog?

There are several things I don't like, but I am biting my tongue.

There are many better options out there than this kennel you want a good working Malinois.

I adopted the dog, not from the breeder. Yes I contacted the breeder.

I realize there are better options out there for working mals, I know this well. That is why I didn't buy a puppy from that breeder.

If her allergies are so bad that she has to be bathed after every time she goes out, is she really that comfortable? I wouldn't go work a dog outside(perhaps you train exclusively indoors) that has allergies that bad. Not worth making her miserable so you have a dog to work.

Did you know that she had these issues prior to adopting her? If so, may I ask what you are looking to get out of this thread?

How do suppose I keep a malinois out of the grass all the time?

The purpose of this thread was to find anyone else that has a malinois from that breeder that may be dealing with allergies. Since they seem to think they do not have an issue. However, how can one dog with such a severe allergies be the only one? Maybe someone else has disccovered that it isn't grass, but maybe something else. I haven't had her long enough to begin to the process of elimination to find out exactly what it is.

I was told she got itchy on certain kibble. She is exclusively fed raw now, and it is still really bad.

And as I type this I got an email from the breeder informing me of previous health issues realted to parasites at the previous owner. I will be following up and this and will update this thread.

"How do suppose I keep a malinois out of the grass all the time?"

You don't. However, if her allergies are that bad, I would not expose her to what triggers it more than what was needed.

Process of elimination? How about taking her to get an allergy test instead, so she isn't miserable in the mean time?

Do not know if you have ever heard of "Sea Cure" but it is a capsule of fish protein designed to help people with severe allergies;  IBS, and other symptoms related.  Love the stuff;  my older sammie guy is on this exclusively only l capsule per day and I have to say it has made a hugh difference in his life and a difference that I could notice after a couple of doses, not known side affects;  started him on 2 capsules per day and now am down to l capsule/day.  Great Stuff,  just google it and read up on it.  Fairly cheap for all that it can cover for good health.  Good luck  Nan

Allergies can be genetic or they can be acquired through some trauma to the immune system later in life- hard to know unless there are others, which I understand is what you're asking, but I have to say I've been nodding along w/hntrjmpr's posts.

I would first treat her for candida- I feel like a broken record saying this but sooo often candida is thought to be "allergies" and "nothing works" (no, it doesn't,because what your'e treating isn't what the problem is; it's systemic). Do it. Look on Great Dane Lady's recommendations for candida and follow it to the letter and give it a few months.

In the meantime, forget what YOU need out of the dog and focus on making her comfortable. Avoid triggers, Benadryl, etc...

How old is your Malinois?  How long has the dog been suffering symptoms?  I have a GSD that also suffers from severe environmental allergies.  It started at around age 3.  We suffered for a year, trying and doing everything that made sense from a holistic viewpoint.  I started a few threads on allergies last year that I am sure will come up if you search for them on this forum.  We suffered for a year before I sought advice and help from this forum.  I won't rehash his story here, but bottom line is that he has been on Atopica (cyclosporine) for just about 10 months now and the medicine has been a miracle drug for him.  His symptoms are non-existent now and he no longer suffers from recurring staph pyoderma as a secondary infection because of the allergies.  He has not had any negative side effects from the medicine.  He looks and acts like he is perfectly healthy.  I feed him Nature's Variety LID Turkey mixed with a little of the Nature's Variety Salmon Meal, along with a little coconut oil in the morning and fish oil in the evening.  I do avoid anything with potatoes and sweet potatoes because of the systemic yeast possibility that Jenni mentioned, and I bathe him monthly with Sogeval 4% chlorhexidine shampoo.  I hope you find some relief for your dog.  Ongoing itchiness is a miserable state of existence.  Best of luck to you both!
