Hello all, I was going to do an AI on a 9 yr old male, and after collecting the sample I noticed it was rather blood-tinged. I've done many AI's in the past, and none were ever like that. I was told a couple years ago that any blood in the collection will kill any live sperm. So I'm asking anyone that may know if that is true or not. Since I had already collected the dog, I did inseminate the bitch, but just wonder if it will be any good? Thanks in advance!

I would assume the blood would affect pH levels in the semen, causing it to be unusable. Would be worth doing some research on and getting other opinions. Good luck!

What does your vet say? Do you have an idea why there is blood?

You can still do a live breeding or AI. You cannot freeze semen with blood in it successfully.
I did a surgical AI with fresh chilled semen (shipped) that had blood in it about 4yrs ago & got 8 puppies.

The vet said due to his old age its probably from his prostate. And not uncommon at his age. I just didn't know if the blood would kill out the sperm?

blood does not kill the sperm but urin would kill the sperm.
