Health

One of the main reason for development of VEO was to get rid of hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, a common disease in German Shepherds. Due to the large and open nature of their ears, East European Shepherds are not prone to ear infections. They live 10-14 years.

Origin

The breed was created in 1930-50s as a working dog adapted for service in the Army and police as guard dogs and sniffer dogs in various climatic conditions. The first standard which has formed the breed type of East European Shepherd was approved in 1964 by the Cynological Council of the Ministry of Agriculture of the USSR.

 

apparently the owners don't like them to be referred to as bred from gsd and want distinct breed recognition.

 

supposedly bred by the KGB as a super guardian, border patrol dog yada yada.

IMO  these are (were?) about as far from the original GSD stock

as is the 'White Swiss Shepherd'.   (ie  not very far at all, really - just

with a set of marketable differences) .   I suspect there are some VEO

lurking in the background of a few of the East European 'Working

Line' imports !

Their chests reach the hock???????????????????????????? Must be some strange looking dog, if it is a dog!!!!!!!!!!!!  Guess this was a creation of Putin's KGB.

However, I was happy to read that their eyelids fit well.

There is a breeder in Miami that breeds them. So they are just larger GSDs? Like the so-called "Old Fashioned" GSDs?

I think they might have meant elbows, not hocks. I hope so anyway!

I think there is something missing, or an elision, between the

chest and t'other end of the dog -  if you substitute 'TAILs' it

makes sense ...

And we do worry about size and weight...

If it looks like gsd, described same as a gsd, temperament of a gsd, suitability as a gsd, it's over sized for gsd...it's an over sized gsd.

the owners and breeders get very hostile if you call them a gsd.

 

they have breed status i think.

 

what if the HD etc claim is true, it would be easy to verify or discredit, they should be bred into the gsd as hip/elbow improvers??
