Anyone tried it for doggy gingivitas?  Nothing else has worked.  Someone brought up the subject a while back but cannot find it anywhere;  my concern of course you use a very small amount to say brush teeth or rub on gums but what about the sugar content in the honey for dogs?  That was my concern at the time.    Thx  Nan

Sleeves work the best!  LOL Tongue Smile

Nans, does the dog  have a build up of tartar? Dogs don't usually get gingivitis unless their teeth need to be cleaned. I scale my dog's teeth every few months so I don't have to have the vet do it, but if there is a build  up you might not be able to do it yourself and will need to have the dog sedated and its teeth cleaned by a vet. I've never heard of the honey you asked about.

Blitzen,  manuka honey is an expensive type of honey obtained from bees which

feed on manuka bushes.  This plant grows naturally in New Zealand;  it can be

cultivated in other countries.  The honey is supposed to have even more of the

antiseptic, antibacterial qualities than 'normal', multi flower honies, hence better

keepng quality and its frequent use in medicine-chests.

I have bought it (when I was feeling flush) but at the time I had it there was no

medical need for it that occurred, so I can't comment on how effective it is.

I'd be a bit worried about using any sort of honey on teeth.

And echo the point about tartar-free teeth not being likely to produce gum disease.

Thx to all and YES Blitzen he has a buildup of tarter;  cannot get it off and he under goes dentals 2 or 3 times per year and I need to find something that helps keep the buildup  to a minimum;  this boy has a crooked bite and it has created him some real dental issues.  The specialist here in SO. CA. wants $1700.00 per cleaning;  not going to do that my local country bumpkin wants between $600.00 & $800.00...They even coated his teeth with some sore of sealer that did not work.  Since his bite is off he won't chew on things much so bones don't even work.  have brushed with everything I can think of that is why the Manuka Honey came to mind as it is a potent antibacterial/anti everything to help to kill germs and heal.  That is why I thought it might work.  It even kills the L-piloria (SP??) bacteria that causes ulcers in humans as well as much other stuff.  Very intersting stuff as well as healing, although not real sweet like regular honey (bear stuff)...Teeth Smile  PS:  there is medical grade and food grade I think;  I can only find food grade which is what I am using.

Anyway was looking for the post on here and cannot find to see if that person has had any success.  This is for my older Sammy boy (now 8 /2 years old) and has dental problems since like a year old.  Really hate to keep putting him under for dentals but cannot find anything to help with tarter buildup.

PS:  very healing for acid reflux and heartburn also...  Great days everyone  Nan

I found the following recipe that was specifically formulated for gingivitis in animals:

1 drop clove essential oil

1 drop lavender essential oil

1 drop myrrh essential oil

Dilute in 1 teaspoon vegetable oil, rub on gums.

(The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood)

I hope you are able to find something that works for your Sammy boy; I just love Samoyeds, my uncle had one while I was growing up and Kodi was the one of sweetest dogs I have ever met.

This might give you some ideas. I use peroxide and baking soda every few weeks after I scrape Bev's teeth. She isn't crazy about it but she let's me do it. You may want to buy a dog tooth scraper for maintenence after a professional cleaning if you don't already have one. Those are ridiculous prices for cleaning dogs' teeth.

I have used the honey on cuts and hair regeneration.  The challenge was to keep the other dogs from licking it off, as it needs to stay in contact for time.

I would not think it would work in the mouth though as it will not stay.  Make sense?
