From another list
On September 13, AKC VP/Assistant Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo,
spoke against electronic collars on a segment on Fox News.
The interview was titled
"Humane to use shock collars for dog training? Critics say they're
harmful to dogs"
Here's the url to the FOX segment:

It was picking up on a story that's been floating around the media about
a "study" done in the UK -- where electronic collars are outlawed in
Wales, and where there's a push to outlaw such collars in other parts of
the UK. There's no way a study done there would come out in favor of them.
Please watch the video and let AKC know your opinion about allowing an
AKC officer to denigrate electronic collars on national TV, implying
that AKC was against their use.

Our Department for the Environment and Rural Affairs commissioned two studies, one a general one
on the use and abuse of 'shock collars' vs. 'positive' training methods which was something of an 'opinion piece' and the
most interesting/useful info it produced was about the significant numbers of pet owners who buy ecollars on the open
market and then through ignorance misuse them.
The second was a better thought-out study of actual training, devised and run by the ecollars manufacturers.
It was revealed in February this year, in response to a "10 Minute Rule" Bill Parliamentary debate, that neither study
had produced conclusive enough evidence to justify extending the Welsh ban to the rest of the UK.

AKC = NFL protecting the ''brand'' is more important than the truth. The AKC rep on the Fox news segment spouts weak points and more than likely could not train a dog . Too bad the O'shea gentleman could not articulate his point a little better.

The report on '' training with remote devices compared to reward based training'' is incomplete. It is typical ''research'' with an adgenda. The best training combines reward based training with proper pressure [ compusion-pressure-correction you pick the vocabulary] the best trainers balance motivation [ positive and negative] to complete their task,. for a well trained and happy dog.

Given the environment in the US today, I think it's remarkable that Crowley said as much as he did.

If ecollars were not readily available to the general public, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
by gsdstudent on 17 September 2014 - 13:09
the conversation is not the problem. It is the AKC sending out a representative who has no knowledge other than popular sound bite[s]. Wake up, blitzen! The AKC is a money collecting, marginal registry who only wants to protect their brand. The people who train, trial, show, and breed dogs are the foot soldiers for our great breed. .Inteligence will not come from the AKC, just propaganda

Whatever......
by gsdstudent on 17 September 2014 - 14:09
blitz; exactly! '' whatever'' you do with your dogs, go to experts to learn more. Training has progressed so much over the last few decades. Misinformation still abounds. Learn more about training than you can from two ''empty headed bleach blonds'' on fox tv. now, who sang it?
