What do you do if someone posts a photo of your dog in the database without your permission?

Depends. We need more information. Is this picture in the public domain? Are they saying it is their dog or a different dog? A link to the picture also would be a great help.

I belong to a dog club that allows members to post photos on their website.  Other than saying the photos are copyrighted they are unprotected.  When searching your database for my dogs pedigrees I discovered someone took my personal photos I posted and photos the webmaster of the club site posted of my dogs and posted them in your database for my dogs.  One photo is a career win picture of my dog with all his ribbons.  Other than being on my clubs site, I have not autherized anyone to use this personal photo  Especially since it's my photo and my dog's pedigree.  I know who did as it says so in the information in the datebase for each dog when changes are made and by whom.  I'm not mad, but concerned this could become a problem at some point?  The other photo they took belongs to someone else, but is my other dog.  But I would really like to take down my photo and post a different one of my dog instead of what they submitted.  Let's just say I'm not a photographer.

You can change the picture at any time. Matter of fact anyone can change the picture.

The picture was posted by you to a site which put it in the public domain and once you do that the picture is almost fair game. I have pictures of my dogs all over the net with cute sayings photoshopped onto them. I never authorized these 300 or 400 copies of these pictures and I sure as hell can't make all these web owners take the pictures down. If you want your pics to remain private I would not post them to any website. You could also request that your club not allow the pictures to be copied by right clicking and saving but there are other ways to copy images without right clicking.

Feel free to change the picture with one you approve but do not be surprised if someone puts back the picture you are changing.

I have had to add a dogs picture to the pedigree of my dogs , because the owner never put one up , and I have had the owner of my dogs that I sold them , readd and take off pictures that I do not think make a good representation. I have even had to change a name that the owner got wrong and left my kennel name off of because the dog is registered with my kennel name in front...

HAD a man ., even put up a pedigree many yrs back that he had a litter out of two of my dogs and of course, I caught it..He added them to this pdb before I ever joined it or knew how to put up a pedigree. I have changed a more current picture of dogs in my pedigrees on this pdb as the best representation of the lineage is very important if you want them to look their best.  Maybe that is why your photos were used...I would be proud if they are good ones.

@Rainwater, I know you posted the original photo, but did you take the photo or did someone else?

Actually, GSD Admin, public domain has nothing to do with copyright.

Just because a picture is posted on the web, it does not give anyone free license to copy and post all over.  And yes, you can file a complaint to have the picture removed.

The owner of the image is the one that took the image.   If I lent my camera to GSD Admin and they took a picture, GSD Admin owns the copyright of the picture.

Check with the US Copyright office  :-)

Not too sure tht is legally correct..this subject was aired today about the Monkey that grabbed the camera out of the hand of the camera owner and took a selfie which was posted on the web and the Monkey is the owner yes, so the place the monkey is contained, has filed to have the pic taken down as the monkey , which is debatable has rights.,..lol

Copyright of dog pedigrees and pictures is a whole other matter..I copy pics off the pedigrees here and when we discuss them, we copy it into the box we post in and discuss them...whose gonna stop us for that...is that a copyright issue..

Oli has posted on this subject before.,Unless the picture is watermarked, I believe the copyright is questionable...

He ( or she) that took the picture, owns the picture.

For pete sake, why would anyone put anything on the net they considered personal and/or private? Don't we know better than that today?  If you don't want your photos, etc copied, then keep them private and copy them only to those you know and trust. If your passwords aren't protected and some unemployed deadbeats in Russia can access them, why would you think the photos made available to the public domain would be sacred?

People post photos of themselves, their families, their homes on FB and then wonder why they get robbed when they announce they are going to the beach for a week's vacation. We eagerly tell FB our birthdates, phone numbers and then wonder why hundreds of people we don't know put birthday greetings and have-a-nice-vacation-in-Myrtle-Beach on our walls. Get smart.......
