I have a question for those who have experienced hip displasia.

5 1/2 year old lab/begal cross spayed female.  Sudden onset of symptoms of extreme hip displasia.  Bunny hopping and obvious discomfort even when resting on a cushy couch.

I say sudden because she hasn't shown any bunny hops or discomfort at home while running and playing with other dogs.  We're on vacation and what has changed in her routine is the advent of a series of stairs she's had to go up and down for the past 3 weeks.  Other than that her routine has been normal.   She's not over weight, never has been and before anyone says it she will be going immediately to the vet when we get home.

In the meantime has anyone ever experienced anything like this?  She really began to display discomfort about a week ago (reluctance to sit) and it has really deteriorated quickly from there.  There are no other symptoms such as lethargy and input and output has been normal and regular.  She has complete control of her back-end, no sudden trips, stumbles or falls, just obvious pain and increased discomfort.

In my experience, and I have had several dogs with HD, onset isn't usually sudden.  I think I might suspect cruciate more from the history/profile you've given'. I had a girl with a cruciate ligament tear, and that was sudden onset. Does she hold up one hind leg sometimes, or really favour one side?

Whatever it is, I hope you get it sorted - good luck.

I agree with what Abby said.

I notice your dog is part Lab, they are very prone to cruciate ligament tears and even part tears. Best to see your vet ASAP to get a diagnosis and get pain relief. She might have damaged her lumbar sacral region, that causes a lot of pain and discomfort too.

Abby Normal,

I think you may have hit it.  She doesn't raise one leg but she did start out seeming to 'favor' one leg when she sat down and the pictures I see doing some reading of this sort of injury she sits exactly in that 'favoring one side' manner.

She's not overweight but she's definitely gotten more exercise these past 3 weeks than she's used too and was often trying to rough house with my Shepherds which could have knocked her about a bit.

She goes to the vet on Saturday.

Good luck on Saturday. Cruciate injuries if that's what it is, are very treatable. Do let us know how you get on.

Just x ray the dog. But HD does not have sudden onset. Thus HD may be blamed for  what are injury symptoms even so dog is dysplastic.
