There you go again...First, this incident happend a while a go, second, what would you have an officer who is in fear of being bitten do? I love how people who have never been there talk and have no idea what they are saying.

"Illegal" ??? As soon as a dog is an immediate danger for anybody it´s adequate.

Are you nuts? If you dogs is out of control and a danger it needs to be shot.

A loose dog is a dead dog...

I see good arguements on both sides,,, for sure there are dogs being shot dead that dont need to be and its easy to see this from the vids that I,ve seen there are other ways Police can control dogs without shooting them dead and the departments seem to be better training officers now from what I,m hearing.

I don't think making it illegal is a solution, and really an officer in danger should be able to, i would. That said, i have seen quite a few videos where a million other outcomes could have been achieved and not included an injured officer or a dead dog. It's one thing when it's an emergency and time is of the essence. It's another thing when it's not that type of situation. The above video, i remember that and it was ridiculous. Or like the officer in TX responding to a burglary. Not in progress, but just to drive out and make a report that theft did in fact happen. 3 hours after the initial call. Hardly an emergency. The owners shouldn't have had the dog in a position that it could have jumped out of the back of a truck barking at the officer, but he should have had enough sense to just get back in his freaking car till they contained it or just left. he was just there to make a report. If they don't want to put their dogs away, they don't get a report made for their insurance company. Easy solution. Instead it ended with a dead dog and laughing officers.
I know i've never been in a situation where I've had to kill a dog. Somehow I've always managed to keep everyone alive and uninjured. Plenty I'd like to have :) or maybe that was the owners, anyway, as long as it's not an emergency type situation, there shouldn't ever be a dead dog to report.

Hopefully, I don't get to much hate for my viewpoint ;0). While there are times deadly force is called for, I think to often that is the knee jerk response to an individual unsuited for the task at hand. Being a law enforcement officer is an inheritantly risky job. They know that going in, if you cant stand the heat get out of the kitchen. There are other means at their disposal to deal with an inheritantly dangerous situation. It takes just as long to draw a weapon as it does to employ pepper spray or taser. Just because they have a firearm shoudln't mean that that is the first thing they employ. How many times has innocents been shot and killed? Any person carrying, has a great responsibility before using deadly force. Is it absolutlely necessary? Alot of the times these decisions are made under extreme duress and have to be made in split seconds. What is the caliber of the man making the choice? Should it be illegal for cops to shoot dogs...No... Should they be discharged and tried if using deadly force in a situation that doesn't warrant it? To my way of thinking absolutley.

mtnman..
Since you have never been there, its pointless to think you know how a person will react in a situation where your life and maybe the lives of others are at stake and you have .2 seconds to decide.
Your number ONE responsibility to the community as a police officer is the safety and well being of the HUMANS who live there. Your number one PERSONAL responsibility is to make it home to your family in the morning. That means that if a dog tries to stop me from doing that, said dog will be stopped by any means available to me. For some reason people at large think that those who put on a police uniform are somehow NOT human or they go through some type of training that makes them different, guess what, still human, still subject to the same needs, wants and desires as everyone else.
You mentioned several choices of weapons available to an officer, taser pepper spray and gun. Have you ever seen anyone go through a cloud of pepper spray to still carry on an attack? Have you ever seen anyone pull the "hooks" of a taser off and continue? Now, I am sure the dog cannot do most of that, but, depending on the dog, its attitude, state of mind, etc, it can continue to attack even after being sprayed, etc, why take that chance?
Should that dog hurt someone really bad after the pepper spray failed to stop it, the next question asked by "monday morning quarterbacks" is, "why didnt you just shoot it in the first place"? Contrary to popular belief, when someone uses a gun, the objective is NOT to kill someone, its to STOP them in their tracks, make them unable to continue advancing, not able to hurt anyone...I can sit here and go through all kinds of examples and steps taken, etc, but, a gun presents a finality, an end to the threat which is why its used. I hope this makes sense to you and those who think that when human lives are at stake, the cop's, yours, etc, you dont argue, you remove the threat, first, fast and forever.
