I've never heard of this variety of tick here in the US....and hope I never do.
However, here in the southwest we have to deal with this guy as soon as the temperatures start warming up.

The only natural enemy of ticks is fire, but we can't let that happen can we.

Tick paralysis DOES happen in the States, too.
Wikipedia: The two ticks most commonly associated with North American tick paralysis are the Rocky Mountain wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni) and the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis)
Then, of course, there's Lyme disease: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyme_disease :(

It's not even summer yet and I have nearly twenty tick bites already.
USA and Canada......:)
Not that I know but surely they occur in the southern hemisphere too..
