My dog Syd has developed a hard, swollen teat. She is nursing 4 pups and doesn't seem to be in any discomfort. My question is do I need to take her to the vet? She is eating and acting normally. The pups are nursing well. Any advice?

sounds like Mastitis...she should see a vet, it can get much worse.

by hodie on 29 September 2006 - 00:09

This is absolutely most likely mastitis infection and it can harm both the dam and the pups. See a vet immediately.

As all have said - sounds like mastitis, which is an infection of the ducts of the mammary gland. One thing I would like to tell you is to keep your pups suckling, even though your vet may tell you its an infection. She needs the milk to keep flowing, and your vet will give you antibiotics that will have no effect on the puppies through her milk. I heard of some-one taking their bitch away from the puppies for a few days to get her better - kind thought, but the bitch was obivously in distress with the build up of the milk. - plenty of fluids and make sure puppies nails are cut too, as she will become very tender if it is mastitis, and everything helps. Depending on the organism involved in the infection, the milk can become "toxic". Your vet may suggest removing the pups from the female. Milk can be expressed if necessary to keep the female comfortable. Better that than dead pups. It can happen, but it will depend on the cause of the mastitis. Watch the pups carefully for signs of illness.

This is only my opinion: In the beginning the Bitch ate her puppies. http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/56555.html#56569 http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/56768.html#56768 Now she has mastitis. Take the Bitch away from the pups and take her to a vet A.S.A.P. (NOW) don’t risk feeding your pups infected milk, treat her for mastitis if that’s what she has(it sounds like it), then put the puppies on an antibiotic if needed and start bottle feeding them and keep them away from mothers milk. If she don’t eat them and is safe to be with the pups then let her help with cleaning and stimulating them. There is no reason after all this BS to keep the pups with the Bitch and risk losing the entire litter. JUST MO Is the Bitch and puppies temperature within the normal range? How are the pups acting? What does the milk look like?

ColeHaus, Your certainly running the gammet here, first some were lost, now she is having issues, This is a rough litter for you, I am sorry for all your troubles. I do agree though that if this is certain type of infection pups could die from this. Need to see Vet to be sure what is going on. Best of luck to you, Keep us posted.
