Hello! Does anyone here know what is the appropriate age for giving heartguard to GSD? My vet told me to start giving heartguard at 6 months old. Any inputs will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Do the first heartworm test at 6months of age. If test negative then start giving the monthly protection.

You actually want to start giving Heartworm preventative before they are 6 months old and then no testing is needed. If a puppy were bitten by an infected mosquito on the day it was born it would take 6 months for heartworms to develop .. I usually start around 4 months or so I also never take my dogs off (live in the south USA) but I do test periodically since that is recommended in case of a breakthru.. Hope this helps

I use Revolution on the puppies starting at about eight (8) weeks of age, and continue this until the age of six (6) months when I place them on Heartguard. At that end I start using Frontline for the fleas and ticks because it seems to work better as far as the ticks are concerned. Of course the Revolution is good for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, but I have some hardy ticks where I live. Bob-O
