What is the best material to be used for a run? Grass, pea gravel, washed sand, concrete, etc?

Definitely concrete, easily washed down. Level And solid base for kennel and run.

I have experimented with rubber mats. They are used in horse stalls. The dimension of the mats is 4ft X 6ft and ¿” thick. They are very expensive. The benefits, they are easy on the paws, extremely durable (3 years with no breakdown) and very easy to wash and disinfect. Also the kennel can be relocated to other areas of the property and I don’t have to worry about a cement pad. “It is not permanent.” The negatives, they are expensive. Because they come in 4X6 Panels, its difficult to ensure the seams are tight.

I use patio blocks. They are approximately 9" x 14". I lay them on a base of sand and cinders 6" deep. They are relatively inexpensive, US$1 each, and can be hosed off. Since they have some texture to them, they keep the dogs' nails worn down and I never have to trim nails. I use cow mats in the bottom of crates and dog houses. I agree with Lewis hartley. Concrete runs are the best way for a permanent kennel situation.I use stall mats inside the building but find that any kind moisture(urine) collects underneath and they need to be cleaned under frequently or odors and mold will occur. They are also very heavy to move.
