Any thoughts on overbreeding?
I have had contact with a breeder that breeds females every heat cycle. Isn't that overbreeding? How can the female have time to recoup from one litter in that short period of time? This breeder has has many issues with loosing pups but says this is very common in GSD's. I find that hard to believe.

overbreeding is wrong; you can do two cycles back to back but let the bitch rest a good year after that; it's common sense; the guy sounds like a money maker

Thank you for your opinion. This breeder bosts about the volume of pups she moves each year, but could only produce a few references. Said she had to keep the 8-10 females bred because it's better for their health after they turn 5 or so.Very starnge and I would never buy anything. If anyone with a half a brain watch her web page, the same females are posted with litters every 6 months.

yes, it is good to breed females that are not spayed; it is good for their health to avoid the prolonged effects of estrogens... pregancy gives the body a break in that sense; but it doesn't mean you can overdo it.
back to back is okay once, but like i mentioned before; give the bitch a nice break after with nice food and care,

Any thoughts on overbreeding?
What can I say? It's disguesting. How can somebody sit there watch their two dogs going at it on each heat cycle and ask for a profit.. to pay their bills or their gambling habit or worse their drug problem? With all of this crap that is happening.. I am in all favor of making strciter laws against breeding of animals.

makgas, Are you serious? What makes you think that it's good to breed females that aren't spayed? I think it's more of a copout and an excuse to breed a female that shouldnt really really be bred in the first place.
I tell ya what my bitch is 2 years old, haven't been bred her and shes health as an ox according to what my vet tells me.
YOU dont need to keep breeding your bitch to keep her healthy.

As we can see from your reaction Brittany you are GSD fan not a breeder. Makgas have right. And it is important for female to have minimum one litter and after that if you do not want to breed you can sterilised her. That one litter will be contribution for female future health.
And if you have small litter it is no problem to have another litter without break.
In every case everyone must maintain female in best condition and give her a lot of love and after that you can expect collective sucess

A TOP vet in the country ( repro specialist) once explained to me that the bitch goes through all of the same changes in heat as when pregnant. As a bitch gets older your best bets are to breed or spay. That doesn't mean every single heat per say, it just depends on the bitch herself- how she recouped from the last litter and what her overall shape is. If you have a 5yr old bitch that produces excellent quality pups, and your bitch was in perfect shape since her last litter then the vet suggests breeding. You'll lessen the chances of pyometria also. LIKE I SAID( before I get jumped)this doesn't mean every single heat.
