I have an 8 month male GSD pup whose ears are not erect yet. When he is focused on something (ball, strange dog or person) he holds both erect. When he is just hanging around the house he has one ear erect and the other is not erect. Should I be concerned? Doing something? Thank you. l8male

What exactly is the problem, is his hearing affected by this?

All i would say to this is watch them very closely for the next couple of months because your dog is still very young and not fully developed there can be some later changes, usually they come up between 3 -5 months and go back down again when teething starts, but they usually come up about 5-7 months but dont worry it isnt unusual for a dogs ears not to come up until 10 months old, also check throught the bloodline of your dog for soft ear, this may have some bearing on your problem. I hope this helps good luck

Sory you either get rid of your pup or do something about it. The pup must have bad ear muscles at that age to carry the ears and their not earact properly. Their either up or their not, wouldn't won't bad ears in my lines. LCx

I have never seen ears that were up prior to teething that didn't again come up later. I add plain whole yogurt (1 tbs.) to the diet (daily)...a friend of mine, origionally from Germany and breeding 30 years, recommended and it seems to work like a charm. Good luck!

The issue is not his hearing, rather the standard for GSD's is that their ears are both to be erect. I am seeking advice as to whether I should be concerned or not at this stage of development.

Thank you for your advice. I will try the yogurt as it seems to make since in regards to calcium and cartilage. I'll let you know if it works.

yes you should be concearned --- if the ears are not up by 10 months time themselves then more than likely they will not erect -- rarely the ear will go up after that time -- cartilization just about ends at that time --there are differenmt methods for helping the ears develop to erect , taping being one of them ... and there are different methods to tape -- you can also buy ear inserts if you know someone in germany --- one mehtod that was shared with me in the past is to cut playing cards to the outline in the ear then cement with a silicon based contact cement -- it will come off easy or you can use nail polish remover to get the rest off -- this is not the only way --- also if you tape or erect the ear watch that your dog does not undo your effeorts --- use a elizbethan collar, your vet has one , to prevent paw scratchging -- another dieatary supplement that works quite well is gelatin mixed with food --[ jello ].-- good luck
