I can't take credit for the petition. It was posted on another board and asked to be forward onto all dog lovers.

Another tactic that can be useful is to go into pet stores like Petland. If you find anything amiss in the way the animals are being cared for, immediately contact your local animal control office and file a complaint. It is not much, but at least it puts them on notice that someone is looking. In our area, many pet stores are constantly being cited by our local animal control people. Sadly, the state officers charged with enforcement do little about anything. In my area alone I know of three unlicensed kennels.
As far as what Bob-o says about the AKC and their pathetic attention to their own supposed standards, he is completely correct. I had an instance once of a breeder doing something completely against the rules and unethical. In the end, I prevailed, but it took over a year and frankly, I do not think the breeder in question received even a slap on the wrist. The AKC is the FCI authorized entity, but they are a joke in my opinion. I try to deal only with them as I must.
I would also suggest that rather than sign only the petition circulating, and making a stink in AKC clubs or breed groups you might be in, that each and every one of you write personally to the AKC expressing your dismay and concern about this arrangement. Again, it probably will do nothing since it is about money....but it is a way to express our outrage.

Unfortunately, there is alot more the sloppy (and I use the term loosly) breeding going on at pet stores that sell animals. They are charging $1500 for cross-bred dogs, claiming them as "Rare". And unfortunatly, (more close to home for me), SOME of the people working there are not so honest about pedigrees. A woman here in Ohio, openly admitted to alot of people that she (while working at a pet store) purchased a GSD. She sold that female, but retained the AKC Papers. Then went out and purchased a female Mal., with no papers, and is not using the AKC# from the GSD to her Female Mal!!! And unfortunately, due to the.... lack of laws and requirements - she's getting away with selling cross-bred dogs to uneducated people. I think if concerned, responsible breeders took a stand and boycotted the AKC, they might just wake up!

I cant believe what i'm reading! You should all wake up. AKC has never been in the business of protecting purebred dogs or anything else. They are as they have always been a breed fanciers club and nothing else. They stage and sanction meaningless multibreed events for the entertainment and false bragging rights of their membership. They (with help from gsdca) have rewritten the standard for the gsd and done their best to ruin an excellent breed. Correct me if I am wrong, but it is my understanding that USA is an FCI affiliate. The only reason I have ever registered pups with AKC was to avoid the perception of ignorant buyers that they were somehow not worthy. The fact is that AKC registration and pedigrees are meaningless; Their shows and "championships" are meaningless, and that is the best of it. The worst of it is that they have for a century tricked the public into believing that AKC "papers" meant that a dog was good. The AKC IS the longest standing fraud in the history of dog breeding.

jdh, for the most part I agree with you. This has caused quite a stir in the AKC dog world too. I haven't heard from one AKC dog breeder who endorses it. We need to hold firm on this, sign the petition, contact the AKC and the GSDCA and any other AKC sanctioned organization telling them we are opposed to this alliance and urging them to tell the AKC to rescind that contract. Include Carman Battaglia in any correspondence. He has a lot of clout in the AKC, is a director, AKC judge, GSD breeder, and long time member of the GSDCA and a former officer. If you have any contacts in the FCI, you may want to copy them on any correspondence. Since AKC is an arm of FCI in a manner of speaking, they will also have some influence here.
Some seem to think it will do no good and that it's a done deal, but we don't know that for sure so we need do what we can to let the AKC powers that be to know that we are opposed to the Petland partnering. The more oppostion they receive, the more likely they will be to want to save face.
BTW, if this is rescinded, the money AKC says they need will have to come from somewhere; most feel there will be a significant increse in all fees for AKC events. I realize that most reading this have a low opinion of these events and those who participate, but you really need to think about this -the AKC people are still opposing this knowing that they will have to pay one way or another. Rescinding the Petland contract will have a much greater impact on the purses of those who show AKC style than it will any of you who show SV style. They are just as angry about this contract as are the rest of us. This is one time that just maybe more could be accomplished by taking the high road together rather than condemning the AKC dark side of the dog world. These people love their dogs and enjoy showing them in their own stule every bit as much as do the rest of us. Most I know are totally digusted with AKC, have been for years. Anyway, united we stand................???

The only way to stop this outrageous and unethical move by the AKC, other than petitions and protests, is to withdraw from all AKC sponsored activities. How might we best carry this suggestion out on a large scale?
by Blitzen on 29 September 2006 - 00:09
I just heard that AKC has voted to rescind that contract with Petland.
