How many here have had bitches that only really show up and work well when they are in season?

Anyone with a dog like this ever have the dog stabilize as she got older and work well all the time?

By work I am referring to protection work/ working in prey drive (not defense).

Interesting question - I have the opposite problem, she won't work when in season.  Normally extremely high prey/play drive and very tough attitude turns "soft" and less interested.  Sorry my reply is no help to you but I'm looking forward to reading the answers.

I am surprised at the dearth of responses actually.  I probably should have asked over in the all breeds section... More traffic....

My young (9.5 months) female who is in heat now doesn't seem to have any changes in her drive, temperament, attitude (BIG!) ;) at all... works the same... intensely! ;)

Most people experience the opposite of what you asked about.

Bitches turn "soft" or get "needy" etc when in heat.

Some don't show any change at all. Usually those
that show some "softness" will show it towards the handler
more than anything. Normally when it's time to do
bitework, they turn it on and get "over it", but can still be
a little soft towards the handler.

That's a reason many trainers don't care much for bitches.
Those twice a year (sometimes 3 times) mood swings can
be difficult to train around. Some handlers just 'put them up'
until they are done their cycle.

Other females will just totally forget about "control"
as Judron said.

I'm working 4 bitches right now.  3 get way more aggressive ( defense) and one has turned into a simpering idiot . She doesnt have the best of temperments on a good day..  I also really have to watch them when we go hiking and such as they are less tolerate toward one another.  One misplaced bump and they would be on top of one another. They literally are bitchy........
