ATTENTION DEGENERATIVE MYELOPATHY DOG OWNERS! Please share post!!!!

DR Mary Whiteley, from Dogenes, is researching Degenerative Myelopathy. She may have found a mutation in a gene, NOT THE SOD1, which affects the level of certain proteins, amount of protein, in certain genes. She is hoping to expand research to expand her assay. This assay is based on an RNA level which is reflective of how much protein is produced by genes. We are looking for blood samples from a total of 10 German Shepherd Dogs, in latter/advanced stages of Degenerative Myelopathy. (Please see conditions for participation in this research at the close of this article.) We are requesting these samples to confirm the assay, which is a signature of DM. We would like to ascertain the effect of this gene regulation with other genes in a pathway. If we can locate other genes, the ultimate goal is to determine the effect of the DM mutation upon other genes. If the pathway is disrupted, it would be a GREAT opportunity for therapeutic intervention! We would like to able to proceed from a qualitative assay to a quantitative assay. The preliminary assay must be consistent to hold up. It would be most helpful if blood sample participants were taken from later stage DM dogs.

Eligible participants must be a German Shepherd, at this time.

Eligible participants will have had negative xrays or a normal MRI to look for the cause of weakened hindquarters.

Eligible participants will have been tested for tick borne diseases and found to be negative.

Eligible participants will include a background history of their DM dog, including age of onset, symptoms, progression and any and all testing done to confirm DM. Clinical symptoms, alone, do not qualify for participation in this research.

What is needed:

3 ml blood in tubes which will be provided. The tube includes a liquid preservative which preserves DNA and RNA.

There is no cost to participate in this research, other than the blood draw from your own Veterinarian. The blood vial will be provided by Dr Whiteley.

No results will be given to participants at this time. Participation in this research is strictly to further research and confirm what has been found, in relation to a possible gene mutation. Thank you to all who will participate.

Please reply on this post or contact me if you wish to participate in this research study and meet the qualifications.

I'm not an owner of a dog with DM but am willing to help.  Please provide a contact for the Dr. listed. I can forward this request over to my vet office and to a specialist in neuro. but I wont do that without having some contact for which the drs. can send requested vials to or to request more information.

Sincerely,

Audrey Estep

Audrey, Dr Whitely asked for me to help her with this. The post is all the info that will be released at this time, so there are no more questions to be answered. It is too easy for others to take another's work and run with it, so we have given out outvall the info, in the post, that is shareable. If you find participants, you can let me know and I will have vials sent to them. Thank you !
