WHEN DO YOU NOT PAY?? I have just had a experience with a well known breeder who used my male for stud, had 9 puppies, lost 3 from stupidity, raised them to six weeks only to discover that one of the puppies was blind and another was part blind! Having all of them checked was advised by the vet to put them all down, as they have some form of Cataracts disorder?? Off course it is all the Males Problem, bearing in mind the male has sired many, many puppies with no problems like this or any other we know of. Whould you say the stud fee is STILL PAYABLE???? Due to haveing no money at the time i agreed to a deferred payment???

Dunno - I feel kind of bad for the guy who has to put down 6 pups!!! That has to be heartbreaking. So is it a birth defect problem or known genetic disorder? Did you talk to his vet? Is it a genetic disorder that both parents have to carry? Or did the mom not get adequate or too much of something during pregnancy to cause birth defects? Money is not always the most important thing.

Any stud dog owner I've known would give the person a live pup gurantee. So if I was the stud owner I'd offer a breeding back if the person paid for a stud fee already. I would think if the people didn't get a puppy from this breeding it wouldn't be fair to charge them a stud fee. Only right I'd think. Mel

If it was my female, I would not chance a rebreeding. And would look to a male with totally different lines for another litter. And if it was my male, I would not do a breeding on a similar female. Unless this was really intense line breeding and alot of recessives combined. Is the sire the same male "Terry" just posted for sale a few weeks ago?

But the person did get live puppies. Stupidity took some of them. Sorry about the genetic factor that could've taken place, but we all take a gamble when we breed. Might offer a repeat stud to a different bitch, but they did get live puppies and if that's in the contract, that's what I would stick to is what's in writing. JMO.

If I buy a car and total it on the way home do I still have to pay for the car? After all I don't have a car anymore. I think a service was rendered a it should be compensated. There are risks with all litters and the stud has certain risks during the breeding as well, STD's etc. But I also agree with scotty it is only money and you should come to some agreement that works for you both. P.S I will gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today!

""LOL"" I will gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today! Kevin is right. I think you should collect when services are rendered (I think that is what Kevin is saying). When you leave things open ended is when problems arise. You did have live puppies but now with the whole litter dead I see nothing you can do but walk away and say sorry for the bad experience on both of our parts... Maybe you will have a male that he will want to use later OR maybe he will have a male you want to use!!!!! ;-) Always here to help. DJ

You write on the payment issue, that you deferred payment because of money issues of the breeder. Would that be not enough to let the hairs on your back go up? What if veterinary care is required for either the dam or the pups? Oh, I think I would have deferred my stud over this predicament. Write off the payment! Look for people who will take responsibility of raising a litter. And also are capable of financing it. Sunshine

Yes! For me pay first before service. If problem arises we can talk about it later. And I do not accept unproven bitches to avail the services of my stud.

Thank you all for the excellent advise, I normally would ask for the stud fee at the time or at least 50% but some times you have to help the breeders with finances, PLEASE THIS IS NOT ABOUT MONEY more the fact that the breeder has made no effort to pay or contact me!!! Im also very upset about the litter and would not wish this on anyone!!!!!
