What are some things you guys add to your kibble to put weight on working dogs?

by Nans gsd on 22 January 2014 - 17:01

Meat... pasta... can use potatoes but I like meat the best.  You want muscle weight, not flabby weight.  Sooooooo, meat, meat and more meat and to keep up energy, use ground beef 70/30.  good luck  Nan

Are you trying to build muscle or put some fat on?

satin balls..... many different recipies out there but they add weight quick and are great for road trips for food when dogs sometimes go off their food.

Why do you want to add weight, and how do you define working dog?

Nothing wrong with a lean hard dog, especially if the dog gets intense exercise regularly and otherwise nutritious food. Less body mass to push and pull and launch = less impact and torque on joints.

I supplement with kibble, not the other way around.  Not a fan of processed food. But it adds some needed volume and calories.

Try supplementing with cooked eggs - hard boiled, or fried in a little olive oil; add shredded cheese etc.. Greek/kefir yogurt. Pasta. More meat poultry organs marrow bones and some fish. Cooked sweet potatoes and pumpkin puree.

My girl gets 20-25 miles per week of road/trail work on top of many dozens of ball/frisbee tosses; tugging and swimming. Hard to keep meat on her ribs she is so active and high energy. Her metabolism and physique have likely adapted to her lifestyle.

gk1...it was a simple question.  It isn't any of your business why I would like to add weight.  I don't have time to tell you mine or my dogs life story.  Was just looking for some more ideas.  Have a good one.

I see no benefit in cooking eggs, or olive oil.
What good is pasta besides filler.
I offer cooked vegetables but mine will eat many uncooked.
Poultry is fine as long as you balance it with some fat and it's not so tainted you have to sterilize everything after handling it.
A little yogurt is fine but I wouldn't make it a regular in place of other things.

Feel your dog, don't weigh it, there should be meat on bone not skin.

resistance training and swimming if you want muscle. fast twitch fibers grow, slow twitch dont. and of course you need sufficient calories.

I do tug sessions and uphill sprints with max dragging me on my skateboard.

always keen for a new conditioning activity.

I think pulls and drags are great conditioning.
Swimming too as it involves the whole body.
I favor long sprints over shorter ones speed over distance, running over a jog.
