I am still dumbfounded on why a malinois (which I do like) are so much more popular then a dutch in the Police/Military world. Can anyone please explain to me as to why that has experience as a handler. I have trained many mals and gsd, but not many dutches. I recently trained a 18 month old dutch and it was by far the easiest dog I have ever trained he was spot on with a very nice solid full bite and very stable. I think he had just as much spunk as a mal but had an off switch like a gsd. Please dont think I am down grading a gsd or mali. I love all three of the breeds, but just would like input from a handler that has experience with both in real life operations.

1 there are much more working line Malinois than Dutch shepherds in the world.
2 Most of the K9 dutch shepherds LE police/military are X cross breed malinois/dutch shepherd in a litter can be 5 mali and 4
dutch shepherd brindle- color but there much more litters mali X mali than mali x D-S or DS X DS
3 There are very good malis, dutchies and also GSD a good dog is a good dog.

I have owned many D-S even here in Holland D-S the roots is for many people a D-S unknown breed
this breed is never been in the spot lights.
You can,t compare GSD breeders with D-S breeders in numbers
Dutch police/military have many LE- K9 X cross mali/dutchies but a GSD is a rare find today here in Holland as a patrol- LE service dog.

I would say that the DS "unpopularity" may be the breed's saving grace. I have had a couple of Mals and a Tervuren, and some day wish to have a DS - I find them very interesting.

I have seen several litters where the fawn pups are sold as mali and the brindles sold as dutchies. Unless you buy an FCI Dutch or registered mal they are the same breed from the same litter differ only by coat colour.
the working crowd I know simply don't buy FCI Dutchie, the dogs they buy are simply dogs from lines not breeds of dog per se.
difficult concept huh, same litter two distinct "breeds".

Its impossible out FCI registered and DNA yellow/orange Malis get 2 differerent colors brindle and yellow/orange dogs
same out of FCI / DNA registered brindle dogs . Only if breeders faking the pedigrees with other dogs you can
get both different type., I have seen this only in KNPV litters they are often mixed but this are not FCI registered dogs and they don,t care about the colors.
Orginal Malinois and Dutch shepherds are the same breed they come from the same district Belgium and Holland -Brabant
but they split the brindle and the yellow/orange dogs apart in +/-, 1900
Groenendaeler, Tervuerense and Laekense herder are also family
The black malinois color comes original from the Groenendaeler. but the color black is a unrecogniced color FCI malinois
