Any ideas? The rescue told me shepherd mix. He is going on 6 months and only 36 lbs, what is the growth rate for shepherds? Is he going to get bigger? Thanks just worried because he has such big paws and ears and want him to grow into them.

He's so cute!

Try this: How to Calculate Your Puppy's Adult Weight

If you have a mixed breed puppy, you can get an idea of his upcoming size by determining what breed(s) he most looks like or doing a DNA Test. But, in all the cases, there's no surefire way to know. That's where a simple calculation comes in handy.

Using this calculation can help you plan for your dog's future and, if you're a really organized person, it means you can develop your pet budget for food, collars and so on.

  1. Categorize your puppy as either small, medium or large based on his breed or the breeds you think he has in him.

  2. Calculate your puppy's age in weeks, which is easy because this is week 22.

  3. Weigh your puppy.

  4. Now here's the actual calculation: GROWTH = Current weight in lbs / by Age in weeks; ADULT WEIGHT = Growth x 52

  5. For example, take a Beagle who is thirteen pounds at 22 weeks. GROWTH = 13/22 = .5909 lbs/week and ADULT WEIGHT = .5909 x 52 = 30.72 lbs

Looks like a hound, to me. Rescues label most dogs with black and tan coat pattern a Germanshpherd mix. Even tho your dog has brindle in the tan , a more common trait in hounds, ( rescue didn't catch that, it seems) just wondering how they would know his exact age since at six months most pup have all their adult teeth.

He won't " grow into his large ears and feet" being a hound. Doesn't change the dog any, you can still provide for him and love him.

Nice looking pup, BTW.

If your puppy is already 6 months old, and has her adult teeth in i don't think your going to get a much bigger dog. Maybe 50 lbs at full grown. Also i think Joanro is correct that you do not have a shepherd, but have some sort of hound mix. Do you have any photos of the pup standing up?

Most rescues don't have any breed experts on hand, or they fugde the truth about the breed in question to get it adopted. Regardless, it's a cute puppy and big or small go have fun with her.

I think you have an interesting dog, he's very nice looking and will make you a great companion. I agree with the rest of the posters, he has some hound in him and is probably the result of mixed breed parents. His temperament is what really counts.

I agree with you all, size doesn't matter. He is and will be loved no matter what. He is my boy. Was just concerned because was told he was a shepherd. Here is a picture of him standing as requested.

If he is 6 mo he will be about double his current weight if he is older then he will be less if he is younger then more.  But in the end he will be what ever he will be:)
