When should dogs be spayed or neutered if you decide to spay/neuter them?  I agree with this article that spaying/neutering too early (before 5 or 6 months) isn't good for a dog's growth and bone development:  http://www.caninesports.com/SpayNeuter.html .  The article addresses canine athletes and suggests only spaying/neutering after 14 months of age.  I recently spayed my 2 1/2 yr old female.  I'm glad I waited.

I don't spay/neuter, don't think it's necessary.  If you do make that choice, best to wait until they've reached physical maturity, after age 2.  You'll find many opinions on both sides of this ongoing debate and the vets are now schooled to mimic P*TA and HSUS, but I'll keep mine intact, unless medically necessary, thank you very much!  JMO

I'm pro spay/neuter, and I agree that it's best to wait till physical maturity on males, generally 2 - 3yrs, however I believe females can altered earlier, between the 18 - 24mo period. That's just my opinion on the matter, but I don't agree with mandatory spay-neuter Bills that say a pet owner must alter their dog. I think that's a load of BS.

To alter or not is a personal choice, and I'll thank politicians to keep their hands off my dogs' junk

honestly i have one question for you

WOULD YOU STERILIZE YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER AT AGE 3.5?

LOL Kershberger, no, but at 17 maybe, especially if they were hanging out with some ugly mutt!

I'd say after 14 months old at the earliest, they should reach maturity first.

I think there is no one rule for all dog owners....
there are so many unresponsible dog owners that need their dog spayed/neutered as soon as they get her/him...on the other hand, responsible dog owners should wait until their dog is fully matured (18-24 months of age, depending on breed). I would not spay my girl as I have lived with female dogs before and can manage a heat cycle twice a year. If a female gets a lot of false pregnancies and very irregular heat cycles it might be a good idea to spay her though instead of giving her hormones on a regular basis or risk a pyometra.

Why on earth would anyone wait that long? *jk*

Anyways, with humans sterilization is frequently done without gonad removal so the individual still has plenty of hormones, and the bits they were born with. Otherwise I think vasectomies and tubals would be a lot less popular, heh.

Give me one good reason which I can not successfully argue,  why to spay or neuter healthy dog.
Hans.
