When I put a “Cell Phone Profile” on my K9 I used the Lithium Ion Battery
as the main source of odor. Prior to training my K9 with this profile I did as much research as I could.

I found several sites that claim to have identified over 100 separate cell phone odors that their
Dogs were trained to detect, which I find hard to believe for many reasons.

“Negative Hides” used during training included TV’s, transistor radios and computer components.

I also discovered that my K9 would not “Alert” on a cell phone in which the battery had been removed from, thirty (30) minutes prior to the hide being placed, which obviously suggest little or no residual odor is left from the Lithium Ion battery.

Any thoughts or experiences on this Detection Profile?

Slam, Hans your thoughts?

has really gone to shit the last 2 years.
thanks for trying to bring it back.

Kim, it's early and haven't had my coffee, but I think I read that you basically trained for the lithium and when removed, the dog doesn't indicate?

Kim, I assume you are refering to cell phone detection in prisons and jails. My thoughts are that most of these dogs are hitting on residual drug odors that the cell phones are contaminated with and not the components of the cell phones. Could the dog be trained to detect the sim card?

Don

What I am saying is that the Lithium was the only main and consistent source of odor that I could clearly indentify that the K9 would alert on .

Michael

The phones used for training were clean of any drug contamination, in my experience a lot of handlers will claim a "find" when none is present and claim that it was there previously  (drug contamination/residual odor).

The only time we would record a "find" , drugs, tobacco etc. was because we had a physical find that you could see and touch.

K9's do alert on residual/contamination odor but not nearly as often as some Handlers would have you think.

Cell phone bomb detonator.  But if the battery is removed is the bomb not disabled so therefore no longer a threat?

Michael

Sorry, I forgot to answer one of your questions, the dog may be able to be trained to alert on the Sim card however, in the prison system inmates are allowed  (rules vary) TVs, radios and sometimes computers which is why I would use the afore-mentioned as "Negative Hides".

Having said that, and this is where it gets tricky, the TVs and other "Negative Hides" would also be used as "Concealment Locations" for the Lithium Battery.

A lot of work, but a lot of fun training this profile too

Very interesting discussion, I don't know of anyone that has had very much success in cell phone detection. You're right, inmates are very clever about hiding and concealing contriband.
