How do you teach this?
It seems hard being that you want your dog to socalize as well be okay when you have people over but how do you teach them not to accept food/treats from someone? I have seen where some trainers say that to help a dog become use to people in your house or even children you want them to feed the dog a treat. Isn't that counter-productive though b/c you don't want someone to break into your house and feed the dog some meat/treat and the dog take it and go about their merry business.
Can you have it both ways or is it just one way or another?

You know what? I remember reading about that in Lassie Come Home! It was one of the many aspects of Lassie that impressed me. I'm pretty sure they set up Lassie with food that was booby trapped with bad tastes, and only fed the good stuff in her bowl. Something like that.
But really are you thinking of that movie Hooch? If a burgler broke into my house I'm pretty darn sure my dog would be too agitated to eat. He won't even eat the cookies at the vet! I take one and give it to him when we get home.

takes a special chemical you put in hambuger
takes one week of throwing it in where dog lives
dog eats,
dog gets sick
dog pukes
after one week
test dog
if not successful
do one more week of tsame thing
after 2 weeks retest with good meat
redo the chemical in meat every 6 mos for two yrs
cost is 900.00 if you pay a trainer to do it.

That's part of PSA training. I'm not up that high yet though. I wouldn't use a chemical. I'd train it the same as I train a long down, and the dog would eat when I gave her the command to. Seems kind of easy but like I say, I'm not up that high yet.

Kohler method, put food on end of wire connected to fence charger.

If you own a business the other methods do not work
trainers have been using chemicals for poisen proofing dogs for years
you can teach leave it for years but if someone puts meat in your window and you are not there, your dog may eat it
crooks put poisen in meats so your dog drops dead and access to a bus. is then all theres

Nah, I don't use "leave it."

Just be careful what you wish for...I mean think of what the down-side is to this training...
*You want to leave for a trip and leave your dog with someone else or at a boarding kennel...The dog won't eat...
*You want your dog to be friendly to others so you give some treats to other people to give to your dog...The dog won't eat...
*You can't keep your dog any longer and you have to sell him or give him to someone else...The dog won't eat...
If you Poision Proof your dog and it's the right dog and for the right reasons...and you know the down-sides to the training...then it's fine...But you must think of the dog and what it'll do to him...

I never EVER want other people to give treats to my dog. But I do want boarding kennels to be able to feed her. So surely there has to be a command to EAT?

i certainly understand.
I guess reading on here about people's dogs being outside and them getting poisoned it does make you think and wonder. Burglar is an extreme example but a easy one is just kids in your neighborhood who just want to be asses and try to feed your dog anything.
