I am looking to invest in an electronic collar to correct unwanted nuisance barking and cat chasing.  I do not want a bark collar since I don't want to lose the bark, but I want to train a quiet command and other training methods I've tried haven't been successful.  I've recently brought a new dog into the household and she will obsess over chasing the cats.  I can't keep them separated or crated all the time, nor can I keep her leashed all the time.  (Dogs are crated when I'm not there to supervise)  We are working in obedience on a leave it command and doing very well, however once the cats are involved all bets are off.  I've heard that Tri-Tronics makes good reliable collars.  Any other suggestions?

I wish I had a link to the Cesar Milan clip with the GSD on the ecollar with the cat, it was posted the other day I think, I hope it won't be like that, LOL.  Has to be done carefully b/c the dog could associate the shock with the cat, or think the presence of the cat caused it, and could resent and attack the cat for that reason.  So you'd probably begin with using it for certain obedience commands away from the cat, introducing a previously learned come when called command around distractions, then when he goes after the cat call him to come, and use the collar on cont. stim if he does not immediately come.

Dogtra..I have had tri-tronics for years but the last 2 where junk and they just do not hold up, the battery that is. I never hardly use mine but when I need it I need it to work. I know a lot of bird dog trainers and they use them daily on their dogs that are in training and most all them have switched to Dogtra.  Just my opinion but I love the Dogtra I have and I have 3 used Tritronics here that all need to be sent off to be fixed ...The Dogtra holds charge much better than any collar I have ever owned and its so adjustable....

Hey Baby Eagle!

Thanks for the link to that PDB thread on E-collars!

I've done a fair amount of information mining here at PDB in the archived threads.  It can be a lot of work trying to find the *good stuff*.  I much appreciate it when folks direct me to the worthwhile reading, it saves me a lot of digging.

Thanks Again,

SteveO

Your welcome Steve, that thread in my opinion, is the best rated e-collar thread on the database since I've been here. And prolly one of the most pro e-collar on the net without all the - BS.

Jim dominated that thread quick, that was very much needed by someone on the subject. I myself wouldn't have contributed if someone of authority didn't promote and correctly proclaim e-collar use. It's wouldn't have been worth the effort.

There was a few threads after that on the subject and they all went sour in the first few posts.
