I have just recently started watching the video " The Game" by Ivan..I have been trying to encourage Prince to tug and play. He definitely likes balls, and plays very enthusiastically with them, but not so much with the tug. He rather chew it, then tug on it. When I try to get him excited about biting at the tug, he is not excited like the dogs in the videos. He really gives a half hearted effort and at times just stands there and looks at me. Any thought ??

I would try some different types of tugs...thin, fat, leather, jute, french linen/ synthetic.  Also try jute/leather rolls, my bitch wasn't thrilled for the tug (loved the ball much more) but did like jute/leather rolls...once she liked the game I could use any tug with her.

Synthetic (she also really likes the nylon/fire hose tug)

Why not use a ball on a rope in place of a tug? Get him to tug for the ball.

How old is the dog?  If he likes the ball now then use that.  The tug is a good tool but not necessary till he is older and mature and ready for more serious work.  I have seen young dogs not care at all about tug toys but bite the tug only when the helper has it and bite like an alligator too!  I guess a little defense is what the young dogs I have seen are working off of.

I used a ball on a rope to really bring out my pup's prey drive.

Once the drive was there, *then* I was able to get her crazy about the tug.

GSDfan...Thanks for the sites, I will look at these later. There is so much out there it is hard to tell what to buy..

k9queen,,,I have a ball on a rope, he is not interested in pulling it. He wants to chew it or chase it...lol..

Powerhaus...Prince is almost 9 months old,,,

Mudwick...As I said above, he wants to chew or chase the ball on the rope...

....I am thinking about taking a drill to a baseball, and stringing a rope through the hole. Then he could pull on it.....

Hello All,
I am completely new to the SchH sport but I heard some pups dont have any drive at all or some might have lost the interest or the drive when mishandled. Is it true that  a dog can loose its drive if handled wrongly ?

Some say there will be low drive puppies by birth and if they dont pick up they end up being pets than schH sport dogs. Also, how do you analyse if the puppy still has drive or not or can be imporved or not ?

Pardon my ignorance.

Thanks

Ruger,,,,I bet your young dog would benefit from a ball on a flirt pole!  Build his drive to chase it and pretty soon he will desire to keep it also takes you out of the picture just incase he is feeling like you are dominating over him a little too much.  I think he sounds like he isn't quite mature in the head yet and needs confidence building~

I have toys from end of the house to the other. The back yard looks like Pet Co exploded, with all the balls, tugs, bones, and squeaky toys. Could it be that I should only bring toys out on special occasions to play? He carries a ball around all day long..One in his mouth and one he pushes with his nose and chases...Should he have free access to toys all day?...........
