Articles for training, or articles for trial?
You can use anything as an article to train with- although metal is undesirable in rainy conditions.
Anything that will lay flat so that the dog doesn't see it 100 meters away.
Hell, I've forgotten to grab articles, or run out of articles, and used my cellphone, as it was the only thing in my pocket.
Ditto for a lighter.

Different things...in a trial the dog has to indicate on wood, leather or carpet/fabric. I use all different sizes but stay near the size requred in trial. When I first put them on a track I tend to use larger ones...when the dog indicates well I tend to proof with smaller ones.
A few times when I forgot articles I've also used my cell phone or wallet...even taken off my socks in the middle of laying my track and used those lol.

Yep, anything.
Try to keep it about the dimensions of a deck of card, and thin enough so that it lays flat and doesn't stick up out of the ground.
Gloves and other articles of clothing are also useful.
A good rule of thumb is, if it doesn't fit in your back pocket, its too big to be an article.

Your carpet swatch idea would work quite well.
Cut 'em down to about the size of a deck of cards with your exacto knife.
You might want to toss 'em in the laundry with a load of towels to get rid of any chemical smells before you take them out the first time.
