When describing a sable, if you would say red sable, do you mean the color of the outer coat or the color of the undercoat..
The same same goes for grey sable.....
Most people say black sable when describing a sable with a heavy black outer coat....I do the same. However, I have a sable with a red undercoat and I call her a red sable..which most people would describe her the same way...
.Which is the proper way to describe the color variation of sables?

I believe a red sable would be a sable whos undercoat is red and whos tan points are very red. I myself also have what I would call a red sable. The areas that would be tan ( behind the ears, legs and undercoat) are very red.

This dog I would give an example of black sable G Meggy vom Gleisdreieck (DDR) though I have seen darker.
I love the sable coloring because there are so many variations.
FWIW

Melba, your dog looks like a melanistic Black and Tan to me, IMHO.
A sable dog will have the agouti striping or bars of dark vs light coloring, on the individual topcoat hairs, not the undercoat.

Nope, Haley is 100% Sable but she is a patterned sable ( carries B&T as recessive) And produces same when bred to black ( both sable and B&T)

Well, you would know. It can be hard with just a picture, thought your dog's coloring was like mine.

I was never a fan of Sable until recently. I guess I had just never seen any nice Sables. Now I want my next pup to be a nice black Sable. Gawd I love them. I have a favourite too. LOL

Hey Guys -Nona - not trying to hijack your thread - but I was wondering if posters could post pictures of different sable colors. Just so we can have a thread on how to identify what color a sable is.
Example -not the best of pictures - I have been told this is a patterned sable - I wouldnt have realized this -

So please post pictures of your sables - and tell us what color you would say they are....
Thanks
Yogie
