We had a "family day" at the club today, which I would highly recommend every club do.

It was nice for the families to come see what it is we're doing all day long on Sunday, get to see all the dogs work, and just hang out, eat good food and socialize.

My son decided he wanted to try his hand at catching dogs, so here he is with the club's helper, catching a very nice beginning dog named Zorro:

Quite a few of the kids were rather keen on trying the sleeve on.

All in all, it was a very fun day.  If your club has never had a family day before, I recommend trying to have one before the weather turns foul for the year.  It is a very worthwhile experience for many, many reasons.

Obviously, its nice for the families to get to come out and see what the deal is.

But its actually very useful for the training director and helpers to observe how the other family members interact with the dog, how they interact with their spouse, etc.

As an example, we got a good deal of insight into why one of our members is so easily frustrated with her dog's progress [the dog is progressing just fine.  Her expectations are unreasonable for any dog, let alone a green bitch.]  Her husband could not help himself, and walked onto the field several times to give "advice" to other handlers about their dogs.

Questionable advice, at that.

Although I almost had to chuckle when he mentioned whipping the dog with a leash to make it out, as it made me think of the recent thread here.
Clearly, the unreasonable expectations are generating with the husband and merely flowing through his wife.

Things like that are useful to know when you're trying to bring along newer handlers.  Sometimes I think we spend more time correcting misconcpetions, falsehoods and hairbrained ideas than we do actually training, when people begin in the sport.

It was a really enjoyable day, and I think the entire club is better for it.
I can't recommend enough that your club give it a shot.

Yes, it means that a training day is somewhat sacrificed in the sake of exhibition.  But in the grand scheme of things, what's one day if [to reference another recent thread] your spouse suddenly has a better attitude about that "damned smelly hairball", and is suddenly more supporting of your interest in sport?
