I don't understand it. You are in control of what your dog does and how it is trained. I keep reading all of this complaining how sports do not test for a "real dog". Nobody said that you have to limit your training to the bare essentials of a certain sport. You can choose your trainer and how you train your dog. You may not score well in that certain sport, but that is fine since you have little respect for that sport. There are trainer all over that will put pressure and test your dog. Don't blame the sport, but yourself. You feed it and dictate how it will be trained.

Forgot to add that many people who claim they want a "real dog" might not know what to do when they get it. Most people can't handle a "real dog" and I'm including sport people. Most of the people in sport don't know how to deal and train a "real dog". There have been world team members that get chewed up by these "real dogs".

This.  A million times, this.

It,s up to the trainer to expose there dogs to many different experiences and stressors not found on the Schutzhund field.

Agree with you there Bob. I have final say on how my dog is worked. It's up to the handler to dictate what is done with the dog. You have to be careful though. If you are new to this and it's an experience training helper, you may have to take off the rose colored glasses and realize that the dog is tapped.

Great post Don!

Also if you're new to the sport, like I am, you have to do your research and find out who is truly an experienced helper and not just one who claims to be :-)
I had one guy who wanted me to join his club, tell me he had been to the Nationals with his dog, and is a top level trainer...then found out from several other people, that not only can the guy not even control his own dog, he'd never been to the Nationals- ever..

I am hoping that once I get more experience handling and with the basics, I will be able to try out some different sports. I think both the dogs and I will benefit from it.
