What particularly attracts you to your choice of puppy from a litter?
Or what persuaded you with your current dog?
If viewing with husband/wife/family have you all agreed on the same one?!!

I spent a lot of time watching my last puppy purchased.
That was Maddy and I made a very good choice.

I look for what I don't want as much as what I think are good traits in the puppy.

In the end it's a feeling more than anything else.
Can't explain it any better.
My own Intuition.

Consider any sign of fearfulness, energy, any indication of intelligence, a look, how it interacts with me and it's litter-mates, size and markings too, at least for me it comes into play, structure, how it reacts to handling, noise, sudden movements, separation from the litter.

I don't have a check list, I just know what I want.
Take time deciding.

After years of picking puppies, I know what I want when I see it. It's hard to put it down on paper. Like Moons said, after go off of your checklist,  it's inuitive at a certain point.

When I first started out in dogs, I had horse knowledge and believe it or not, that helped, but it was still something that developed over time, trial and error and time, time, time.

I think one of the most important things I've learned over the years is to take the emotion out of it. You have to be willing to walk away if the puppy/dog isn't right, no matter how bad you want a new one or how long you've waited.

Well aside from all the testing, if you know and trust the breeder, take his input on which pup you should take for your goals and ask why. Bob brought up this topic a week ago and I didn't add this to my reply. If you know and trust a breeder, he will be able to recommend the best pup for you. He has seen them everyday and night. If he is a reputable breeder, he knows what he has. When you test a litter, you're looking at the results at the time. The breeder is judging over 7+ weeks. If you don't know the breeder, well ask for his input, but make up your own mind.

Temperament, conformation, willingness to please;  I like to let the puppy pick me and if it is not right for me;  move on.  Always go home and think about it before making a final decision and it will come to  you whom will be the right choice and why.  Good luck  Nan

What draws me is confidence, attitude, drive, anatomy, movement, type.

My newest pup drew me because she had a spark in her eye. Her video was hilarious as she barely held still long enough to be taped and in later video she ran her little mouth right at the camera and I knew I had to have her.

I chose my Rikkor daughter based on her absolute b**** attitude, at 8 weeks all her littermates gave her a wide berth, which worked out well as she had the best structure, too..

I chose working dogs for myself, and since I'm much better at picking puppies than my other half, he doesn't get an opinion.

Ya, I watched video after video of the sire which I always liked and followed online. This dog could go forever !!!  It took 3 years to get a puppy, but I got one finally. I had deposits with two different people from the states and they all were BS scammers I will not mention and never got my moneys back. Finally, hooked up with the real deal. Thank You !!!! A'Tim is the BEST !!!!

eye contact for me.....no direct eye contact no dog.. if you got eye contact, you got attention, you got intelligence, you got focus..most of the things after that can be trained... :)

I generally hold back several pups on merit for show, work, and future breeding. Assuming there's anything I consider worth keeping in that litter.

Raven was the exception. In a workingline litter of mine I narrowed it down to a choice between a very high-drive, Type-A personality stock-coat sable; and a sweet, laid-back long-stock nearly-black bicolour.

The sable would've been the logical choice, better for breeding and competition... but there was something about that sweet little black fuzzball I couldn't help but keep coming back to. My gut said "keep him," so I did, and sold the sable. I haven't regretted it. He's the most perfect companion I ever could've hoped for. He might never be a national champion and top stud, but he brings a smile to my life each and every day.

Afteral, what good is a dog if not a good friend to do everything with?
