Well, I started my new job and had a killer of a day, but not as bad as Drake's. I was gone for 12 hours and although exhausted, had to take him for a walk, poor man. He is just so easy and was happy when I came home (I would have been mad at me). So, off we went and were having a good walk when I met a young man who commented what a nice dog Drake was, and he had a GSD at home.
Then, he started to question me and told me he found his boy at the pound and was not sure he was a purebred. He said the backs of his ears were rusty colored and he had a lot of black, but had never seen a GSD like him. Then he pulled out his phone to show me a picture. He's a red sable! Definitely purebred and definitely working lines! I told him what he had and we talked for quite a while. He was found as a stray at about 5 months and had to go back for treatment of pneumonia from bordetella and it was a touch and go situation. He said he weighs about 70 lbs. and he thought he was too thin and was trying to get him to gain weight. I explained the proper weight of a GSD and that his dog was within normal range so not to worry.
I told him to check his ear for a tatoo as he may be able to learn some background info. I think he was afraid that someone would claim him but I explained that it would not happen, he legally owns the dog. I didn't have a pen on me but told him about the PDB, so maybe he'll drop in.
Anyway, I'm sure someone would be happy to know that their lost puppy found a good home. Of course, he's neutered so no matter his backgroung is not breedable, but may be workable!
So, just wanted to share... a nice young man who is now certain he ha a purebred GSD and seems absolutely thrilled. I also thought it would be nice to let a breeder know that perhaps one of their missing pups found a fantastic forever home! He was found in the Squirrel Hill area of Pittsburgh.

That's neat! I've come across a few owners of sable and bi-color rescues who didn't know they had GSDs, either...even came across one very small sable bitch whose new mom was told by the shelter the dog was a keeshond mix!

It really was pretty neat and he was a very nice young man. He was telling me that the dog had black that made his toenails look very long and I asked if he was talking about black hair on the front of his toes. He was really excited to find out about "penciling" as he had never heard the term, let alone seen it before. That was one happy man when I left him. I have a feeling he'll be even more proud of his boy and can now tell people he has a working line GSD! I think the only thing that would have made him happier would have been winning the lottery jackpot! Made me feel pretty good to be able to give him the info, rewarding experience!
