most of my home is hardwood or tile, but we have to re-carpet our stairs. they are "floating" stairs, tho they do have wrought iron rails. while i would love to have them made of hardwood, those can be VERY slippery. sometimes our dogs run up or down the stairs and they wouldn't have any traction and grip on wood. so, it must be carpet. does anyone with a heavy shedder (like a german shepherd) have Berber? would anyone know if that would be a good carpet for shedders? i don't want any long-ish shag type - that would be a pain. my male gsd is also a longcoat, so besides shedding like a fiend, he sheds different length hair too. any help with this would be appreciated.  sales people really aren't gonna be of any help - they want to sell, esp the more expensive carpeting.

Berber is not made the way it use to be. It now runs like nylons, I wouldnot use it with the dogs nails.
Have you thought of hardwood, then securing a runner in place. then you can just throw the runner out and get a new one.

good info on the dog nails! i hadn't considered that yet! i had thought about having each stair made & using some kind of runner, but i worry that they would slip or slide. the thought of any of us falling down the stairs is scary ( i did fall from the 2nd landing a few years ago and, tho i didn't break anything, i did get some big owies!). i really don't want any dogs breaking a leg or worse.  each stair would have to be made separately and that would probably get expensive too. would just a very thick plush carpet be the best? i would make a cover  for one of them - angus lays on the second landing with his head on one stair & gets it dirty.

If you can get a Dyson vaccum it's easy to clean.  Berber would be the best.  The way they go up stairs I don't think nails would get caught.  Biggest tip would be matching the carpet to the hair so a light tan color with darker tan specks in it.  There are also rubber type grips you can install on free floating stairs.

pure Nylon carpet can be dyed, but it mats down quickly, poly fiber, or poly fiber blend can not be dyed but holds up on the matting better. My mind is at a loss right now, but there is also one on the market, that is basically plastic, you can pour bleach on it and clean it. the issues with it slide something across it and it will melt (burn). I would not want my dogs paws on the last one. I am careful of what I put on my floors because of them. Tile and wash with Vinager and water, or a cheap Vodka.

doberdoodle-whatever i do get, i'll HAVE to get a "mix" of color - angus is black & red, claire is a red sable and our mutt is a brindle long-ish hair, so browns, blacks tans...
i'll check to see if i can find a "traditional" berber. i have 2 vacs, one's a sears progressive - heavy, but does a good job and the other is a smaller canister from sears that does a good job too. the sears repair says that they get more dysons in for repair than any other brand, so... i had planned on getting an animal dyson, but, Consumer Reports also said the Sears Kenmore Progressive was better and it was half the price. the reason mine were in for repair - the mutt. he chews EVERYTHING. including vacuum cleaners and their cords, lizards, birds, shoes, socks, pillows, toys, bags, leashes, collars, harnesses, bones, antlers, water bottles (empty & full), pens, pencils, paper & on & on. sometimes i vacuum things that make very bad noises in my vacs. i'd hate to kill a very expensive dyson! thanks for your info.

If what your saying is that the stairs do not have risers, they can put hardwood treads on each step and wrap the middle like a runner. If they are conventional stairs a runner can be secured with those rods at the back of the tread. Decorative and serve a purpose. I like a frise. Berber sucks on stairs because it unravels and once it does, there is no stopping it.

I would do the hardwood replacements and then have a rubber  tile runner made.  I have rubber squares from Sherwin Williams in my birthing box.  They  make them in dark beige and probably other colors...I would have no carpet to soil or embed germs or  dirt   oeriod.

Or go with the rubber tiles all the way...they do not slip. or are slippery

Sam Spades' idea is closer to what I would do also...no berber  it shreds immediately

ok - berber is out. too bad, i like the look of it, but not if it unravels. maybe the wood with a wrapped runner. now, each step is wrapped. its a drag for the carpet people to "install" - lots of extra work.  i'm gonna float this idea past my husband. we'd have to see how much it would cost, but i think i'd like it. it all comes down to the $$. thanks for the input from everyone - i do appreciate it.
