My old Aussie has come down with diabedies a month or so ago. With help from my vet we are manageing it OK.
I asked my vet if a glucose monator would be helpful, he said sure, but didn't say which would be best for dogs.
Is there a specific meter that you've found better then the rest for dogs?

Human one is fine.

You can a relatively cheap one at CVS,Walgreens, whoever. Walgreens has their own brand, which is pretty afforadable. When you get one, make sure that you're able to check the calibration on it with what the vet is using. Sometimes there can be a fairly sizable difference in results. I always used my own personal one (had one diabetic animal so far) and took that to the vet with me. Also saved me money by them using my meter rather than theirs!!

The meters themselves are usually cheap but the test strips can be very expensive. Check the prices of the corresponding test strips before you purchase a meter.
