Hey all

With the loss of Abbie there is a big horrible void in our home.  I am considering getting a puppy in a few months when the weather cools here a bit (well a lot...lol)  I have heard some lovely things about white GSDs and think they are beautiful.  I was hoping to get the opinions of you kind folks.  Are they prone to any health issues?  Temperments as mellow as I have been told?  Good with kids?

As you can see from the Avatar pic Abbie was a piebald...  very, very, piebald.  The chances finding another like her are very rare.  I loved that crazy coat.   I am not interested in a "Panda."  As cute as they are they are not the same and i am not out to break the bank.

Anywho, I would love some feed back.  Some KIND feed back.  I really do not want people to rip eachother, or the dogs, or the breeders apart on here.  Not sure I could take it.

Thank You

~Rooka

I've had two white GSDs in the past, actually my first was white.  She was a sweetheart, very smart, willing to please and wonderful with my children.  The second was not so.  She had temperament issues that came out when she was around 2 years of age.  I could not trust her around strangers AT ALL and that kind of dog is very difficult to live with.  My children were small at the time and I couldn't even trust her with their friends.  My father teased her as a pup and at one point she had him pinned in a chair, teeth bared an inch from his face, because my youngest decided to play "let's pretend Pap is hitting me"!  His face was as white as hers.  Bad situation (even though I felt he deserved it at the time) that I wouldn't want to repeat.  Do have to say though, she was wonderful with my kids and would have protected them with her life, no question.

So, in a nutshell, it depends on the dog and the dog's lineage, as with any other color.  If you like different, I've heard many state that their LCs had a softer temperament and I would have to agree, mine did.

My suggestion is to go for temperament.  Find a reputable breeder you're comfortable with and you'll be more likely happy with a pup of any color, as long as you get the personality you're after.

I know how hard it is to lose a special dog, but don't try to replace her...  you can't.  Best of luck to you in your search.

I guess that is really it in a nutshell.  Temperment is WAY WAY more important to me then coat color.  I just think they are pretty and wondered if they lived up to the accolades I have seen.

There is no replaceing Abbie. The thought never crossed my mind.  Just really want to take my time and do this right.  I want a mellow (well mellow for a GSD), intelligent, loyal dog that I can bring into my home and make part of our family.  A dog that will run around with my boys and play ball and likes to swim.  If you can recommend a breeder that breeds dogs like this I am all ears :)  I will even road trip to get it :).    We are thinking around November isa good time to do it.

@Ruger1  Thank you for the kind words.  I know how the board is...Been around a bit.  Was just hoping for a Snarky free thread...think the PDB could use one.

South Carolina.  But I am willing to travel if needed.  Would like to be able to do it in 2 days( well, 12 and 12)  if travel a was needed but if it came down to it, for the right fit, I would work it out. :)

oh, and I really think I would like a girl.  I am the only girl in the house now (husband and 2 sons.)  Need to balance things out around here...lol.  I have ZERO plans for breeding by the way I know that is important.

Silbersee (Chris) is near DC, she's got some nice dogs.  You could send her a PM and tell her what you're looking for.  I don't know her personally but am on this and another board that she frequents and she has a wonderful reputation.  If you tell her what you're looking for, she'd make the right fit, I'm sure.  I don't know if she's got any litters planned for your time frame, but I'm sure she'd be happy to let you know.  She'd also be good to recommend another breeder and I would trust her to be honest.  She's the first one that came to mind, I'll try to think of others.  I know many here I'd trust but am not sure where they're all located, although I'm sure many would be willing to ship.

I'm sure you'll get more tips from others here.
