Here's a minor question I've been meaning to ask, and now's as good a time as any to post a new topic:

We have a water softener, and then we have a RO filter for the drinking water.  Of course I use filtered water for the animals.  BUT... they also seem to like drinking out of the toilet, plus one cat especially likes drinking from the bathroom faucet (she comes running whenever anyone goes into that bathroom, and meows for them to turn on the faucet).

I assume that water comes from the water softener.  How bad is it for animals to drink "softened" water?  It has high levels of sodium, right?

I have never heard any bad things about animals drinking sofened water. I think it is more so that the animals like fresh water.(sink, toilet) I had a client that had a cat that HAD to have her sink drink. She would meow like crazy if you ignored her calls for water from the sink.lol  I think the sodium isn't as bad as the other chemicals that are in tap water. Would like to know if anyone else has anymore info on this.

I never used a softener, but I have for many years used a filtration system for the entire house. The type I have uses fine sand, charcoal, and a metallic compound to strain out sediment and bind the chloromet that is used. The chloromet is a combination of chlorine and ammonium and the problem with public drinking water supplies. It is used in this mixture to keep the chlorine active longer, as it will otherwise evapourate.

I think that dogs, in some ways, have a more sensitive digestive system and that the chloromet can kill helpful bacterium that live in the dog's intestines. But I think a dog would have to drink a lot of water to cause a problem. When I made the decision to install the house filter it was not for the dogs - it was for the wife and me. The water came from a small lake and had a foul odor and taste most of the time.

I see no problems with giving softened water to dogs. Mine prefer to drink from a commode rather than drink from their buckets. At least when they decide to play in the water they do it outside in their buckets.

Best Regards,
Bob-O
