I promise to mend my ways! suddenly awakened @ 4;30 am by that dreaded smell of skunk! Ah that pungent aroma that sends one into a frenzied panic! although all of the yard is enclosed with a 6 foot privacy fence;somehow those crafty creatures find a means of entrance! So beware of those marauding bandits who with the raising of a tail can make your unannounced early awaking a stressfull experience! And do not procrastinate ! Always have the remedies on hand because swift and decisive action is required if you wish to return to that blissfull sleep you were enjoying! Ah summer one must enjoy it!

Does tomato juice really work or do you need a special shampoo?  We were driving through the forest yesterday and smelled skunk. Had me thinking about what I would need to have on hand in case one comes around here.

We did the skunk thing a couple of weeks ago,
dog still stinks when she gets wet.

I like the smell from a distance...LOL

I have found that Dawn detergent cut's through it on human skin, dunno how it would do on fur.

She did it, she can live with it, perhaps she will remember the next time...lol

I had one dog who came to hate skunks and would go out of his way to kill them...

Needless to say they will not be coming in the house for a while.

This is the best deskunking solution--sadly, I've had to use it a few too many times. Tomato juice works better than regular shampoo. Over the counter solutions are inadequate, but this stuff really comes close to removing all of the scent from the dog (although it didn't get the stink out of a rolled leather collar that got a full blast when the dog got skunked in the neck/chest).

Skunk Deodorizing Shampoo Recipe
1 quart hydrogen peroxide (4 cups)
1 cup baking soda
1 tsp. liquid detergent soap
Shampoo into coat liberally. Rinse with plain tap water.

Btw, if you have any cuts or scratches on your hands, this will sting like mad.

I've found that no matter what "shampoo" you use - in the end you will still smell skunk whenever the dog gets wet, for weeks.  I've found that following up after the shampoo with another shampoo/rinse and then another - then another with a "scented" real shampoo made for humans - then finish off with a nice long truck ride with the dog in a wire crate in the back of the truck (in an open bed) - on the highway.  The air-flow will really help dispurse the scent off the dog as he dries.  Yes, I had a dog who enjoyed killing groundhogs - and skunks.  Sometimes it was a weekly thing too.

I've used several things and the recipe that Christine posted gave us the best results.  After a 2am dash to town to find baking soda one summer night/morning I've learned to make sure I have it on hand.

I live in a rural area, there was not even a 24 hour gas station open within 25 miles!

Yes , the recipe that Christine posted is the best all around...just keep it on hand...and then follow up with some nice people scented shampoos...I use  HEAD AND SHOULDErs FOR WEEKS...

MYAH has had 12 skunk  sessions down in Sante fe in the last 4 months...every time she goes to the back of the property there is a skunk to chase and she continues doing it...doesnt matter ..

That must be that ISKA v Kapbusch and Lago in her.  They could careless..as long as it moves,,it is hers to conquer and she does.

I think all of us should buy a half in the Peroxide bottling companies...I use it for the prevention of germs and the vomit inducing agent and for cuts and getting stains out of many things and now for  SKUNK  shampoo.

Peroxide  and vinegar are my two staples at my place.
