I am not at all experienced with LP in German Shepherds, but have experienced it in smaller breeds.. I do know that in smaller breeds its not a good thing to have. It does affect the physical ablilities of the animal. I am sure to what degree, depends on the serverity of the LP. I am assuming since you put the effort into importing a puppy you are seriously wanting an animal you will be working or breeding.  If it were me, I would be in contact with the breeder to discuss this matter. Personally, I would not breed or work such an animal.. There are so many other things to consider. Do you have a replacement warranty.? Did you buy just a pet... Like I said I am not experienced with LP in large dogs. Maybe it corrects itself with time and tightening of ligaments. In smalll breeds, if they have it, it doesn't go away, just gets worse with time...

Is your puppy from working lines or show lines?  Not that it makes a difference as to what I would do. I'm just curious. As with any breed, some lines are more prone to certain things than others....JMHO

Like Nona, I have no experience with LP in the larger breeds, but once had a Yorkie with severe LP.  Since she only weighed 4 lbs., it was never really a problem.  It was discovered at her very first vet appointment when she was a little over 8 weeks old.  I always referred to her as my catholic dog becuase when she sat, she "knelt".  The tops of her feet were actually on the floor behind her and she'd sit on her knees.  She never had any pain and lived to a ripe old age with no issues.  I'd say in the larger breeds, with weight on the legs, you'd run into some problems, but can't say for sure.  What kind of prognosis did the vet give you?

I've never heard of a luxating patella in a German Shepherd dog either. I would recommend getting a second opinion, possibly even with a specialist, such as a board certified Veterinary Orthopedist. I think it would be worth the money spent to get a definitive answer.

It is rare in GSDs but not unheard of. I agree about getting a second opinion from a specialist.

I would take your pup to a specialist. It is possible, but I agree with second opinion. This website is run by Dr. Degner

he has a very good library of information for clients and future clients. Plus when he was at state he was a very nice person.
Always,
