I just found this interesting after the thread on extracting oil from the mountains of western Pennsylvania. I'm not sure if this is the same process that was discussed, but I'm assuming it's at least similar.
Our area (SW PA) has been bombarded with new gas wells in recent years. My daughter and her husband recently turned down a request to tap gas on their property. I lived in an area with the largest coke mill in the US, second in the world. Just last year, the air quality in that area was deemed near the top of the list for being one of the worst in the US. Now there's a question that the chemicals used in the process for extracting the gas may be contaminating our ground water. Of course, there are no federal regulations because the process is new and EVERYBODY trusts the fuel industry, right?
We're watching the tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico because what happened, couldn't happen. Always a day late, it seems.
I've got some investigating to do, but I'm willing to bet everything that our water is contaminated and they're scrambling to get as much gas as they can before the expensive regulations kick in, no matter the health concerns. Seems PA has been pretty lax in it's industrial history and the people who live here don't matter as much as the profits.
This is exactly why I'm against taking the oil from the areas mentioned, you can't trust the gas/oil industry, period. Poison the water, kill everything... just as long as somebody is making money.
