Escaping dogs seems to be pretty common lately. Here's my story....

Saturday afternoon one of my relatives (he's young) came to my house to get a Bronco truck that was in the back yard and he and my husband worked on cars all weekend. Anyway,
This morning, bright and early,  I get a call from a number I didn't recognize. I was sleeping and they called me like 3 times in a row and finally left a message. It was a police officer calling to tell me he had my German Shepherd! I never have gotten dressed so fast in my life!

Jena, who I had left outside last night in my concrete-walled back yard was running up and down a busy 4 lane street! Routinely,  I put her in her kennel or bring her inside.. It was such a nice night I allowed her to stay outside which she prefers anyway at night....
Instead of calling A/C, the officer held her there for me in the back of his cruiser on the side of the road and told me how beautiful she was...She isn't spayed (nor is she in season, thankfully!) My city has a mandatory spay/neuter ordinance, however since I am planning on moving out of state very soon, I never bothered spending the extra money for a kennel permit, although she is licensed with the city. Had the officer sent her to A/C I would have had some serious fines, as the penalties for unaltered dogs, plus dogs running loose are pretty stiff.

This officer was awesome (he explained that he has 5 dogs and some cats- I doubt HE has a kennel permit either lol!)
His partner who appeared to be a rookie as he was quite young and trying to look hard,  looked really put out though, lol. Guess he wasn't a dog lover. I could be misjudging, but he seemed pretty darn grouchy...They asked how she got out and I explained about that lower wall in the back (It's 4' rather than 6' like the other walls) and told him I guessed she finally figured out she could clear it.

I thanked him profusely and put the leash on her and walk back home (they were only up the road)
I got home a few minutes later and walked around my back yard to see if there was some other way she could have gotten loose.
Sure enough, my gate on the side is WIDE OPEN. Stupid relative didn't latch it properly! Thank God it was Jena and not one of my rowdy workingline dogs,  who would have been surely hit by a car or stolen. (I think Jena would have been stolen too though, had the police not picked her up, she IS pretty) I've also decided that even though I'm not going to be here too much longer I'm still going to build up my 4' wall to be on the safe side!
I was SO relieved...OH and the officer knows my TD who is in LE, and another officer I train with.. I am such a Name Dropper LOL

Anyway, the moral of this story, which most of you already know, but some may not...

Make sure you have ID tags on your dogs at all times, and check and re-check your gates, latches, kennels, etc...
