I plan to start tattooing my dogs and pups from each litter beings I am starting my kennel and its finally coming together. I have a few questions though before I try it.
1. Is there a certain order or way that it should be done I read on another post that Someone found a dog with a tattoo and it was M5ITC5 Something about the region breeder and pup number from a C litter. Could someone explain a little better to me please.
2. Is there a way or a program that I should register my tattoo with? Kinda like a microchip but with tattoos?
3. How old is it ok to tattoo? How old is to old? Id like to tatto my adults also if possible.
4. Is the ear the only place to do it?
Id like to thank in advance the ones of you that take the time and answer my questions. Also If you have any stories or other advice about tattooing Id love to hear them!

We used to tattoo puppies at around 6 weeks. There are options online where you can register tattooed puppies - depending on your location. From my experience the ear is the best area for GSD's because the other option - the inside of a hind leg (inside hip area diagonal -behind belly button) is usually too hairy in adult GSD's and a tattoo will be hard to read especially in darker dogs.
Yes, you can tattoo adult dogs as well provided that you have numbing spray or (icing) gel available (just as for the puppies).
After numbing the area it is very important to disinfect the area that you apply the tattoo to as well as the tattoo machine, but that should be a given...

First you will need a tattoo kit. Six letter kits are inexpensive but will not do the USA code, you'll need the 7 digit kit from Hauptner. It's about 200.00 or so.
Next is ink. I have 3 types. Black in a roll on dispenser, green Hauptner, green from the farm supply. They all work well. Personal choice.
USA has a 7 digit code that identifies the region, tattooer, year the dog was born, kennel identifier, litter and dog within the litter. The WDA has no set code. It's best to use the USA code as it's structured and tracable. I've identified 5 or 6 dogs over the years that were tattooed using the USA system, others that just had letters and numbers went unidentified.
If you would like to be a USA tattooer, I believe the information is on their website.
The right ear is the best and only place to tattoo a dog. Stay away from thighs, bellies, and other parts of the body. One of the worst things I've seen is a dog owner picking through fur, looking for a tattoo that if they managed to find it, it couldn't be read for all the fur. Poor dog on it's back, owner looking for tattoo. It looked like a monkey searching for bugs. The judge wasn't impressed either. They didn't show thir dog that day. Do the ear.
I've done all ages with good results. The ear was not affected. 12 weeks is the cutoff some tattooers use.
