If I want to rule out a food allergy for itchiness, can someone help me with a plan? What would be the most common food allergy suspects? I should feed only one protein item at a time, but how long would be good to see a result? Any other tips for figuring this out would be appreciated. And it is a bit off topic, because it is my cat suffering...hope I can get some ideas and help anyway... thanks!

( I think the shot the vet gave him is wearing off, he's starting to scratch again. His hair has almost all grown back and I don't want him to rip it out again.)

The most common allergens would be corn and wheat.

How about a protein allergy culprit? Would it be tuna or chicken as #1? I wouldn't even think of feeding beef, I mean what cat would ever catch a cow?

LOL!  I completely missed the part about this being about a cat!

I know with my dogs, 2 out of 5;  anything with Flax--either seed or oil in it they are itching profusely by the next day.  Figured that out pretty quickly.  Other stuff sometimes a little more difficult.  Sometimes it's not the proteins as iit is the processing.??  Nan  Also years ago one of my dogs was terribly allergic to lamb;  ANY kibble with lamb.  Now I never tried her on fresh raw lamb but she could not take ANY kibble with ANY lamb, or ANY combination of chicken and lamb or lamb at all of any kind.  Nan  Go figure.

what do you feed the cat on

by beetree on 19 May 2010 - 18:05

Pretty  much eats Fancy Feast and Purina, he's on the hairball formula one, because he was ripping fur. It is chicken based but does have corn meal, lots of it . The canned stuff is usually a bit of everything, so I was wondering how to set up a plan to figure what is causing him this problem. I don't want to have to give him a steroid shot every 6 weeks!

Thanks Lisa,

I appreciate the offer to help, but I'm a bit of a skeptic with kinesiology, or some of the aspects. I see visions of the witch doctor feeding me and my cat fish oil pills and plying our pressure points, and my pocketbook will still be emptied.

My cat is 10, only 9 lbs, low to normal thyroid. I had been feeding other expensive organic food. too, but then I was worried about over doing the protein percentages. This is a recent change, past couple of months really, all this allergy itching.

I would try revolution if its a case of sudden itchiness , I would suspect some type mite before a food allergy even ear mites can spread to the body on cats ,

Thanks Leif, No mites, no fleas, no ticks, I still need to check his urine for possible diabetes. We had to wait for the shot to wear off first, which I think it is. The vet pretty much agree it is a food allergy. I was hoping someone had experience nailing a food culprit item. Not much luck!
