I'm thinking about giving the schutzhund training a try. I'm doing some research on training techniques and it seems there's quite a bit to know going into the sport. I'm told I'll mess up my first few dogs, so, I would like to minimize or avoid that if possible. I did a search on Youtube for German Shepherd schutzhund puppy and came across a few videos.

My question is; What is the best way to start a puppy and what do you do when you start it? It looks like young dogs are worked with some type of rag in the beginning. What are they doing?

With a rag they build drive and train grip.  Do you have a puppy yet?  If not I would go ahead and start going to a club and learn from them, watch them.  Some may have puppies that they are starting in it, and you can learn from them.  I'm sure others on here will have a lot more advice to add to that.

Great that you're going to give Schutzhund a try!

Now don't believe you're going to mess up your first dogs, either.  I know "first-time" dogs would most likely do better with experienced trainers, yes, but I've seen people do really well as newbies with their first dogs, and I do mean really well.

Here are some articles to get you in the swing of things, too:  http://schutzhundvillage.com/index.html

If you look on the left-hand side, it says "Armin's Articles" and "Other Articles," but of course there's nothing like getting out there yourself and training on the field.  What kind of AKC training do you do now?

Best advice,
nevermind.

I didn't see the question.

Find a schutzhund club whose training methods and philosophy (if any) you are comfortable with, and LIKE the people.  Then, WATCH for a while.   Socialization, IMO, is the most important thing for baby-pups, as well as foundation work.   Watch, ask questions and learn.   Don't just assume that because someone says they have been in the sport 20 years that means they are "experts."   It may just mean that they have been in the sport 20 years.

they are building a foundation for bitework by promoting and encouraging the puppy to play tug or war, learn the ropes, promote prey drive, teach it how to grip, to chase anything that moves, to have a good time, to be all it can be.

don't go with the attitude that you will "mess" a first few dogs. they don't have a crystal ball to know that, give the dog a chance.

I loved that one with the big pile of plastic. I have some of that and will try it.
