Perhaps they did not have the correct scent.

I'm so sorry this happened. What an awful shock.
I've had no experience with this so I'm hoping those who know more will chime in, so I hope this thread stays to the top.
What I have read, though, is a few ideas. These make sense to me (I'm not saying any of these are things you did or did not do, I'm just making a list):
- The bitch doesn't feel safe. Maybe she wasn't acclimated to her whelping area long enough, or maybe the owner didn't have her long enough...for whatever reason, even if it seems to her people she is in a safe & secure area, it doesn't seem so to her, and so she eats her puppies to "save" them from predators (weird by people thinking, I know) or perhaps to save herself - no puppies frees her up.
- Maybe with feeling odd after the C-section, she didn't feel right and therefore felt threatened.
- It sometimes does happen with young and/or inexperienced mothers.
- Sometimes even in a "safe" place, owners have friends (even ones the bitch knows) in to either watch the birth or come in shortly afterward to see the babies. Again, this can be threatening in her mind.
- There is a possibility of, separately from the feeling threatened issues above, that some dogs simply do this, and in those cases, the tendency could be passed on genetically since with interference puppies will survive to grow up and be bred. So SOME dogs have have a genetic tendency to being bad mothers, and some may just have a bad time for whatever reason and even though it happened with one litter, it may never happen again. Obviously, though, I'd take off from work and stay with mama for at least 48-72 hours, certainly over the nights, to keep an eye on her.
Again, I'm very sorry, and I hope more people contribute to this thread.

there is a mental condition some dogs have basicly ''infanticide'' I have seen it in a couple import Dobe bitches its horrible and pretty rare I think , I would say the puppies may not be good candidates for breeding as like produces like , you must muzzle her and allow them to feed when you are there holding her down use two people if you need to,you have to have the attitude ''listen here bitch!!....'' , do not leave them alone with her for a minute even when they get bigger

If the bitch is muzzled remember that newborns cannot eliminate without help, which is why the mother licks them. If she is not allowed to do this, you must see that the puppies are taken care of for this. Take a cotton ball, dip it in warm water, and gently stroke the vulva or penis, and around the anus. This MUST be done with newborns until they are eliminating on their own. I can't remember how long it is until they do this. A week? Two weeks? Anybody? LOL, it's been a long time since I bred a litter.

I know of a bitch who did this, slaughtered all six of her puppies. But it had already been determined by humans that ALL the puppies were defective in one way or another.
Tess, I had to do that with my little dying puppy. Poor little tyke, she didn't make it.

You stated that she had a c-section, and was a 1st time mother?!.....
Anesthesia can cause "side effects" on some dogs (like people). There is a big chance, that she killed her puppies because she was frightened, hormonal & not in a "sound state of mind" at the time......it is a very tragic scenario....but it can/does happen.
