Hi All,

I am currently feeding Natures Variety Praire to my 3 dogs and they are doing great on it. I have however been reading about the benefits of raw and am wondering if anyone would be willing to share a recipe or two with me to try. I have tried the NV frozen raw but it is getting very pricey so I figured if I could make my own it would be a bit more cost effective. Thanks so much!

Hand chicken to dog
Hand pork to dog
Hand beef to dog
Hand egg to dog
Hand lamb to dog
Hand venison to dog
etc etc etc. All the recipes you'll ever need.

If you're going raw, you don't need recipes.  Throw the dog a piece of meat, with bones.   I started out with recipes and it was so complicated and so expensive, it wasn't worth the work.  Then I got info on raw feeding and, with the assistance of some raw feeders here, went completely raw.   I ended up having to go back to TOTW, at least for the time being, but it's because of certain issues I have with my dog, not the diet itself.  So, my advice is, if you're going raw, go all the way.

NV, has had some recent recalls. Were you aware of that?
I did try NV once. The dog ate the first bag ok. But then the second bag was like uggg I don't know look on her face.
So, for me that meant the dog knew something was up. About 5 months later a recall.
I fed the buffalo.

Now I jumped in feet first to raw in November and all my dogs eat raw meat. The formula is 80% meat, 10% bone, organ 10 % , or liver is 5%
Feed the dog 2% of this formula for his weight so say he is 70 lbs. Take 70 x 2%- that will equal the total weight of all three of these things.
There is a Facebook raw group if you want that I can send it to you.
I can feed a 90lb dog and a 22 lb dog for about 22.00 a month sometimes, depending on my deals.
I buy by the case. So shop around it is cheaper then Bravo and or Natures Variety. :)

Hello there is a raw feeding group on yahoo that may also provide some helpful information for ya as well as support.

Also Dmedia just recently gave me a link to greentripe.com that has excellent healthy tripe treats that your pup may enjoy.

Good luck feeding

Hi All,
Thanks for the information. From what I was reading doesn't there have to be a supplement involved as the protein source is the meat and where do the other vitamins and minerals come from?  In the formulas of raw diets I always see veggies and vitamins? Matthews.. Yes, I was aware that the raw chicken formula of NV was recalled. I never fed that formula, I switched between rabbit and beef. I would love the raw link for FB,Thanks! Thank you scarlet, I have access to fresh green tripe and feed it, they love it!  I will go to the site and read about it.

gsdland, that veggie-and-other-stuff formula is OUTDATED material. NOT necessary. Go to the yahoo group on rawfeeding that Scarlet suggested; unbelievable amounts of information.

Just one word of caution- some dogs tend to "inhale" rather than chew properly in the beginning (think about it- they are used to eating kibble), so observe your dog while he/she is eating for a while.

You can read the ingredients of the raw diets you are buying frozen to get ideas as well.  If you look again, NV raw diet has no added vitamin supplements!  Everything in there is coming from whole foods.

A common mistake is feeding too much bone.  Chickens are a lot of bone and the boniest parts are the backs and wings.  If you are going to feed bony things you need to balance it out with muscle meat.  They also need organ meats- livers, kidneys, lungs if you can get it, and green tripe.  My poor dog was pooping dust one day after I gave him too much bony chicken, he was crouched over for like 10 minutes.  I don't like wings, backs, and drumsticks.  Split breasts are ok and quarters are ok when fed with other meat.  My dogs love shank steaks because they have the shank bone in them for chewing.

Nothing wrong with giving veggies if you want to, but they must be pureed in a blender or juiced, or they won't be digested due to the plant cellulose.  Kale, spinach, mustard green, whole sweet potato, these are healthy things.  Dark leafy greens.  To get the dog to eat them I blend it with yogurt, also very good.  Don't forget eggs, an easily digested protein and also has vitamins.  Mine also get greek yogurt, fish oil, and a multivitamin.

PS- handing an egg to a dog... I did that.  She batted at it with her paw, not sure what it was, then it started to roll away so she slapped her paw onto it and it cracked, yipee!  Made a mess though!
