I'm trying to find a solution to clean my dog's ears with. I wanted to see what people here use, either store bought, or home remedies. My mother-in-law said she heard of using half vinegar/half water, but I would rather get some advice on a formula people are actually using on their GSDs.
This is just for general cleaning once a week. Her ears are not smelly or red. On that note, how often do you clean your dog's ears? I have read once or twice a week so far.
Thanks!

I use Blue Powder ear treatment with good results. I don't clean my dogs ears unless I see head tilts or scratching. I have one dog with chronic ear issues due to environmental allergies, so she has to have hers cleaned regularly.

I use Malacetic Otic. Cleans the ears great and has a great smell.
Please do not use water some will say it is ok but it can cause more problems than it can solve.

I do not mess with my dogs ears unless there is a need.
Emphasis on need.
There are many products depending specifically on that need.

I had a GSD who suffered severly from ear infections and I believe part of it was too much ear lotions (vet prescribed). I would not use any antibiotic solutions or over the counter products and rather stay away from ear lotions. In case of a cut or scratch inside the ear I now use Calendula lotion. You can buy Calendula tincture (don't use undeluted tincture - can burn and cause rash) and mix it 1 part tincture with 4-5 parts of water - fill in ear dropper bottle (new or sterilized). If you warm it up slightly (hand warm) it feels better (test on your hand). Calendula is great also for an-aerob infections in the ear canal or on any cuts and scrapes on skin and mucous membranes.

2 parts water and 1 part hydrogen peroxide
or
2 parts water and 1 part apple cider vinegar
*Don't forget to dry them thoroughly after you clean them as well
My Dad used to use apple cider vinegar but uses H202 now. Works very well in breaking down the ear grime in the ear after they have been left wet from the rain or swimming. We only clean his ears if they start smelling or are dirty so usually after a few days he goes swimming. There was this once instance where he had an ear infection but the ear cleaner from the store got pretty expensive after the first bottle so we switched to apple cider vinegar and that worked a lot better and it was also cheaper since we would just get it from our pantry

I use white vinegar and warm water, half and half. I also dip cotton balls into the mixture and squeeze out most of the excess liquid before using it to wipe at the ear. If they have a lot of grime in them I will dribble some of the liquid into the ear and massage the ear then use a dry cotton ball to wipe it out.

I have never had an ear problem with the GSDs but with Mom's cockers we have used Chlorhexidine and water for cleaning with very good results. You can also use Grapefruit Seed Extract (NOT the same as grape seed extract), this is a thick oil, I use 20 drops to an ounce of water and use it as a wipe and cleaning solution for anything that doesn't look right (on any part of the dog). It has natural antibacterial as well as antifungal properties which makes it an especially nice solution for the ears.

I use this recipe. It works great. http://www.zimfamilycockers.com/EarCleaner.html.
For those of you who fight with Pyoderma, this is the best treatment to keep it under control.
I wouldnt be washing the ears out unless they are infected. You disturb the natural flora in the ear creating your "own" ear infections. You can use a tissue and clean them out of you want once a week. Other than that, I would leave them alone.
