Spirit,

It is difficult to say if it is a bad mix or not.  The dogs are not titled or proven and no OFA is shown.  The bottom half of the pedigree, New Puppy" looks to be from pet lines or backyard bred.

I would say YES! this is a bad mix since someone isn't very educated in their breeding practices.  But, stick around and you might learn something.

Thank you Vickie...

Samson is my dog and I purchased the puppy on Friday...  Samson is a family pet, he is an awesome dog and because of him I would like to get more involved with GSD's etc., so I think I made a mistake with the purchase of this puppy...

The breeder told me that the puppy came from good parents and that she was a good dog, they also said it was okay that the two were related; however, I did not realize how closely they are related....

I want a puppy from my dog...  Like I said he is 6, he gets around fine and has had no health problems; however, I want like to avoid making any mistakes.

I have asked the breeder to allow me to return the female; however, she keeps telling me that she and Samson would be a "legal" breed...  I told her it's no the legality of the breed; however, it is the health of the breed and would they produce good strong off springs.

Any suggestions/feedback would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Family pets should be JUST that!  A family pet.  If you want to get more involved in the GSD and are interested in breeding your dog(s) some day then you have alot of work to do.  Firstly, you should probably have Samson x-rayed for hip and elbow displaysia (sp?) and certified by the OFA.  To me this is a MINIMUM!  Rash decisions are NEVER good!  You should always think LONG AND HARD before you purchase a new puppy.  Now, you have done a misjustice to the puppy and the breeder.

The breeder told me that the puppy came from good parents and that she was a good dog, they also said it was okay that the two were related; however, I did not realize how closely they are related....

EVERY "breeder" good or bad thinks the parents of their puppies are "good parents"!

I want a puppy from my dog... Like I said he is 6, he gets around fine and has had no health problems; however, I want like to avoid making any mistakes.

Just because "he gets around fine and YOU THINK he has no health problems doesn't mean he is breed worthy!  I have a 10 year old male that gets around great, imported him, did x-rays on his hips and they are HHHHOOOORRRRIIIIIBBBBLLLLEEEEEE!!!!!!!  You would never know it by looking at him though!  You really need to get some health testing done to find out if he is healthy or not.....I bet you don't even know if his blooodline carries vW, or EPI.............heck there are numerous genetic disorders, I can not name them all.

I have asked the breeder to allow me to return the female; however, she keeps telling me that she and Samson would be a "legal" breed... I told her it's no the legality of the breed; however, it is the health of the breed and would they produce good strong off springs.

Many many good titled and proven dogs are linebred but the people doing the linebreeding usually know of what they are doing and the dogs have been titled and had health tests done!  You REALLY need to study and study hard.  There are too many dogs in the pound, you should go visit a pound some day and keep in mind that most of the dogs you are looking at are going to die because someone thought their parents were good dogs and would make nice puppies!

Any suggestions/feedback would be much appreciated.

Spay and neuter your Pets!  It's cheaper than the health tests anyway and healthier for your dogs.  I am sure there are NUMEROUS people on this board that can tell you of terrible breeding experiences where the mother didn't do too well with delivery or something went wrong!  Do you have the bank roll for an emergency c-section or for other complications?

Spirit:

Just because you like your male(and who doesent like there dog) doesnt mean he is breeding quality. There is a lot to consider before you make litters or a litter. Yes you want a pup from him But what do you really know of him Temperment, History,Genetics(good and bad) You need to learn about the breed and then work your dog then get a objective opinion of the breeding quality of what you have. Don,t bring a life into the world unless your willing to care for them all if need be.

Wow, I am very impressed with the knowledge that has been shared!

Thank you all soooooo much!  I located the OFA website and I will see if Samson can be certified.  I know he comes from a good back ground and when I first got him, I did attend some training classes with him.  They were just obidence training, I think he is too old now to get involved into anything serious.  But I guess if his health all checks out, he would be good to mate and then (if time and knowledge permits), I can start off fresh with a good puppy...  I need to research that first though...  I would like to get involved with a sport dog, but I will research everything to make sure I am making the right decision.

Previously, I did not want to get to serious into training because I work full time and I had two smaller children at home.  My kids are now older and one is about to join the Air Force (sad but proud mom). So, I will have more time to learn and really be sure of what I want before taking any further action.

I am really lucky, the breeder told me that she would allow me to return the female puppy, she was very nice and understanding about it.  I felt really guility about the whole situation and it really pushed me to find some resources (like this one) and learn as much as I can so that I do not make any additional mistakes.  I am taking the puppy back tonight and I told the breeder to keep $100.00 for the inconvenience.  I think that would be fair, she is a sweet puppy but I'm not knowledgable enough to mate them.  I do not think it would be fair to the puppy or to any off spring that might be negatively affected.  I just wouldnt want to take the risk.

My hopes are to get more involved, these forms and this web site is truely a power house of knowledge!

Again, I sincerly appreicate all the feedback.  I will continue my path of learning!

Spirit,

You are making a very wise and good decision!  I commend you!  And who says your 6 year old dog can't earn and obedience title or rally or...............heck, I can go on and on.....there is so much you can STILL do with your 6 year old dog that will prove he CAN work.  You can probably even find someone to help him learn hearding or TRACKING is a great and enjoyable thing to get him titled in!  Tracking is the MOST natural thing a dog can do!  They start using their noses almost as soon as they are born to search out a nipple.  Shoot, he has pleanty of time to earn some titles and make you proud and make him a more desireable mate!

I understand where you are coming from, I was there 10 years ago, almost exactly!  I also have a son leaving for the Army on MEMORIAL DAY of all days and I already grieve him leaving me.  You can feel free to email me anytime and I will be glad to help you if you should need it.  tulsapetsitters@aol.com

Hum. I guess smeone did not like my post here and deleated it. Maybe it was too negative? All I have said that was that  I would not do this combination with the knowledge of HD  info presented or missing on the pedigrees.
I guess someone does not want ot hear the truth but just wants to hear nice stuff.
